Oblivion on Vista

This is driving me insane. I've got the shivering isles expansion for Oblivion but I cant for the life of me make it work, not the fact I cant find it, the fact I cant actually play the game. I launch the game and get the error: Cant find Master.esm file. I've also got the Knights of the Nine expansion installed and this worked fine, I played all through the game with no problems at all.

I've tried unisntalling and re-installing every which way possible but still get nothing. There was one time it did launch into the game but when I pressed 'new game' nothing at all happens. This is doing my nut in, any ideas as to what i'm doing wrong? I was using a couple of mods (landscape texture mod & natural environment i think) but I disabled thesein the data files options but still no luck. I'm using vista 32bit, I have also tried on 64bit but still no luck. Thanks
 
sounds like your load order is'nt right.
try this;

oblivion
patch 1.2
S.I
KoTn etc
mods
texture mods

if you use Oblivion Mod Manager open that and activate the above.
if you don't use OMM when you start Oblivion, select the "data" option on the start menu. tick off S.I and your expansions + mods etc.

I've tried doing it in that order before but I have problems with installing the 1.2 patch before shivering isles. It says it cant find the old file, and the contents dont match or something like that. And there's also the shivering isles patch which apparently is essential otherwise it stops working after 50 odd hours. I have tried using the mod manager at times to change the orders etc but still that same problems. Thanks for the link though I'll have a look now.
 
Well I just tried again and re-download the 1.2 patch so i installed in the order:
oblivion -> 1.2 patch -> shivering isles -> shivering isles update (1.20416) and nothing else.

I then went to play the game all looked fine. The only data files i had loaded were oblivion.esm and the shivering isles.esp. It all loaded ok no error messages but when I click new game nothing happens, and when i clcik continue game/load game i get the message: "None of the master files used in this game are loaded, returning to game" (or something along those lines). What can I do?!!!
 
got it.

you have the wrong region 1.2 patch.

make sure you use the UK version, i downloaded an an american version in haste and had that problem.

you NEED the correct regional patch to match your game.
 
Thanks MooSey, I take it it's the same with the shivering isles patch - I need the same version as my game?

Also one other thing I noticed is when I start the game the version number in the bottom left of the menu screen never changes - is this because i'm installing the wrong patch and its having no effect?
 
I've tried the other patch and now it loads it the menu screen fine, all the updates/installs seemed to go fine, but when I click new game absolutely nothing happens. This is ridiculous, I love oblivion but I've played it so much I need a new challenge, along comes this big expansion pack, fantastic I thought....obviously not :mad:
 
Not what you want to hear, but I have oblivion working perfect with vista premium. Not one single crash in over 20hrs of gameplay.

I had it working perfectly in vista with the Knights of the Nine expansion, over 110 hours :eek: :o .

It's just this shivering isles expansion which is goofing it all up. I'm considering installing XP again but I have a feeling that that wont fix the problem and it'd be the second OS install in as many days and considering I have 8 exams coming up in the next 2 weeks I should probably just wait :(
 
Thanks for all your help Moosey, I had a look through that forum, unfortunately I didn't see anyone with similar problems to myself, it seemed to be discussing problems with poor performance/sound/mods not working, rather than my problem of the game not working at all lol.

Thing is I cant tell whether its Vista related or not. I wouldn't mind installing XP again to play it but the thng is it worked fine under vista - just not with the SI addon so I'm not to sure that installing XP and running it on that would actually solve the problem.
 
Unbelievable, I've just installed XP and installed it on that, exactly the same thing. I installed Oblivion, then shivering isles and the latest patch, start the game press the new game but, click yes.........and nothing, nothing at all. Wtf is wrong?
