Oblivion / Shivering Isles / Knights of the Nine question

After finishing Fallout I had a mad urge to play Oblivion. However I also never played the expansions, so I'm gonna grab 'em tomorrow from a local store. What I'm wondering is though... I've played the original Oblivion but want to do it again. I'm under the impression that Knights of the Nine is not really an addon but just a collection of bug fixes? Is this true? And also Shivering Isles is a "proper" expansion. But will it just expand the original game or will I have to play Oblivion, then finish it and install Shivering Isles?

Just if KOTN is just basically a lot of bug fixes then I can skip that and just get Shivering Isles.

Or can I just install everything, update to the newest patch, install the unofficial patches, install mods, then play and be merry?

*confused*

No, KotN is a collection of downloadable content - horse armor, class-specific houses, that sort of thing.

Shivering Isle is an all-out expansion.

How the hell did you finish Fallout3 already?

Knights of the Nine features DLC, and a short quest (Knights of the Nine) on the existing map

Shivering Isles adds a new area and a much more significant amount of gameplay (20-30 hours depending on a number of things)

Shivering Isles (the area) can be accessed at any time I believe.

I'm guessing by finishing fallout 3 you mean just completed the main story line? lol

im 20 odd hours into it, lvl 13 char and im still messing about with side quests in megaton... lol. i have yet to go to the radio station for the main quest yet lol...

I think there is some sort of requirement to get to the expansion area. I remember trying to get to that area at one point in oblivion and it wouldn't let me. Either my character was too low a level, or perhaps it was because i hadn't finished the main quest with that character, im not sure.

There is a time requirement, but that's just 24 in-game hours before the gate opens. There are no character requirements. But when you try to enter it's a rather involved series of responses and the gate does not open immediately even after you answer correctly - you have a wait a good few seconds.

Knight of the Nine is a collection of goodies plus a number of extra quests. Fun but not really essential.
Shivering Isle is an expansion set that creates a new island. This is accessable after a few hours of in-game play. You get the notification as a message. Definitely recommended.
If you play Oblivion, I would urgently recommend you install the Oscuro mod which takes care of the initial rubbish leveling system (its major fault) and makes tha game perfect. It's freely downloadable.

Well, played it a fair amount. Hit level 20 and installed the level uncap thing and at level 22 at the moment, finished a lot of the side content and the main story but still have a fair amount to do. But I wanna leave that stuff for the next time around, when more mods come out and so forth so I have more to do than just modified content.

Aye that was on my list of mods to get :)

Thanks for the responses, I'll just install Shivering Isles and Oblivion and leave Knights of the Nine since it's just a collection of addons it seems.

Neither of the expansions add anything vastly different from the core game. KotN has a medium length quest and some nice armour, Shivering has a decent length quest (along with lots of side ones) and some new items. Nothing mind-blowing but you can never really expect much from expansion packs.

If you already own Oblivion then buying KotN seperately at £10 is definitely not worth it. If you don't own Oblivion just get the £20 Game of the Year edition which gets you all 3.

Uber thread revival. Got a Q of my own actually.

Well, I have entered Shivering Isles and I tried getting into some guys house, rather unsuccessfully and I was arrested and lost all my stuff. Is there any way that I can get it back?

Go back to the castle where you were released from (it will be the closest to where you were caught). Enter. Look for a chest labelled as "Evidence Chest". It will be somewhere in one of the guarded areas and locked with a four tumbler lock. Usually it will be in a basement area. You will need good sneak to find it as it will often mean entering areas you shouldn't be.

Knights of the nine features a huge quest line to recover holy armour (crusader basically) and vanquish an evil being, comes with a house lots of other weapons and armour and lots of bug fixes.
Shivering isles, well its HUGE, you go thnrough a portal and its a whole new land thats immense, it is quite awesome, great story too.

knights of the nine was given out free on a weekend a long long time ago. I wouldn't be supriseed if u can find it hosted somewhere. I still have the install files which i beleive i could install now if i wanted and dont haev some time period i had to install it in.

I dont think it woul be iligal to pirate something given out free either ;)

Yeah thats Battlehorn Castle mate. You get a big castle with patrolling knights as your home. Just checked the official site, they only ever gave one plugin away free and that was Battlehorn.

KOTN adds a big questline you have to complete before you get access to the armour and the lodge doesnt get filled with knights untill mid way through the questline.
