Oblivion

Just download that plugin that makes wildlife not attack you as often. Seems a bit silly to cripple the combat of the whole game just because you can't handle killing bears, wolves and lions :o

Or play the Knight of the Nine expansion.

im hopefully starting oblivion 2nite. after mucho study.

i used these sites;

http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?SCID=27&CIID=36919&p=1

http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html

have installed OOO and a few texture/fix mods etc.

i am preparing to be enthralled.

to the OP, those links were invaluable for learning about the minefield of oblivion mods, i also bought the guide book. i now feel i can start this game and get max enjoyment.

i hate games that you play, then think "hmm i'll have to play it all over again now i know what i want"

I have just started the game again myself, having upgraded to an E6600 and GTX8800, so finally I can enjoy the game with a good framerate.

I will once again, recommend the official strategy guide from Prima which is 350 pages of stats and walkthroughs. It is one of the best guides I have ever bought as it is very text heavy with small margins and covers just about everything the game has to offer.

Right, here goes :D

Qarl's Texture Pack 2
Better Tiling Textures 1.11
Parallaxed Qarl Textures 1.0 (includes Skingrad Roof Textures)
Parallaxed Qarl Textures 1.1 Update (includes normal map fix)
Bluesteel's LandscapeLOD NormalMap Fix MipMap Fix v.1.1 (by Soor)
Better Tiling LOD Textures (4096)
Better Night Sky
(Installed in that order so I get parallax without bad overwrites)

Armour of the Grey Fox
Improved Lava
Cyrodiil Terrain Map
Better Horse Eyes
Sunlit Interiors
Illumination Within
Kafeis Better Rings
VAs Better Gold
Natural Faces
Tamriel VWD
Book Jackets
Badmagic Chrome Dwarven Set
Natural Environments
Crowded Roads
Dark UI (BT Mod /w Dark UI)
Dark UI Loading Screens
Kvatch Burning (new menu background movie)
Blades Ceremonial Armour
Archmage Armour
Town Ceremonial Armour

The initial Parallax/Texture packs were installed in the given order to make sure overwrites were correct, ok some addons conflict or give a slightly unrealistic effect, but damn it looks good regardless.

The game stutters a little more, but tbh, for the graphical tradeoff, im happy. It looks very good, the BT mod is good, and in all honesty, its benefitted the atmosphere a lot, as it looks better, and plays better.

I've played through the Thieves guild quest like that, and some other side stuff, havent really played much of the main quest aside Kvatch.

Im thinking of buying a new gfx card to secure me to the end of next year, tell me, can the x1900 - 1950's run oblivion good?

I'm running it at 1280x1024 on high settings (with 2xAA + HDR) with my Sapphire X1950Pro 256Mb PCi-e
P4 3GHz
2Gb DDRII PC3200 ram
and it runs sweet...do get the odd stutter, especially when involved in a mass scrap in the rain!!

On the subject of Oblivion what’s the best equipment possible in game?

Armour (whole set)
Bow
Shield
Sword
Arrows

The best Armour set that you can get is that Imperial Dragon (?) Armour, I think. It's the set you get after completing the main storyline, if you're good at Heavy Armour skill, then it's absolutely awesome.
Alternatively, you could get some of the best commercially available non-enchanted Heavy Armour, and enchant it with Black Soul Gems to have Shield.
The best clothes overall are when you get a set of non-enchanted clothes (not Armour!), and enchant them, so combined they have 100% Chameleon - i.e. Invisibility. Don't make it Armour, as that clanks if your Sneak skill is too low. With this you can get away with anything! :D

I use an x1800xt and it looks sweet, you'd have no problem with the newer ones.

My Imperial Dragon Armour is light armour, I think you get what's appropriate for your character.

Umbra and Goldbrand. Have a look on gamefaqs at the Daedric quests and it'll tell you how to get Umbra.

Umbra's in Vindasel, grab the staff Apostheosis from Rindir's Staffs (costs 6k but is awesome), then go in Vindasel and bash her in, take her Ebony armour and Umbra. DON'T give Umbra to Clavicus Vile!

Goldbrand you need to be higher level for, I think you win it in the gladiatorial contest for one of the Daedric quests but I might be remembering wrong.

Umbra does a fair whack of damage and has a long soul trap enchanted on it for filling up your soul gems, or... Azura's Star! (Daedric quest again)

Goldbrand just does tons of damage for general pwnage.

Umbra's a great sword til you can get hold of Goldbrand, this time round I'm not at the right level to get Goldbrand just yet.

Umbra, Azura's star and Apostheosis are quite lethal together too, use Apostheosis as much as you want, and bash people with Umbra to keep Apostheosis and your other magical weapons nicely charged up.

It's even better once you get hold of Goldbrand too.

Don't forget Umbra's weightless because it's a quest item.
