Oblivion ?

Be careful with some of those stutter fixes as they can implement a framerate cap (need to tweak .ini files to fix).

In terms of framerate it all depends on what mods you use, Vanilla should run at 75fps+ I would have thought, but slap on the mods and you will get some chugging in the cities (especially if you only have the 768MB variant of the GTX460). The high-res texture packs will slow things down a lot.

Ok, well I might try the mods then. I've only just emerged into the daylight near the start of the game, so I won't lose much saved game time.

Just hope it mods ok with Steam.

What is one of the recommended mods. Having a look at Planet Elder Scrolls atm and there seems to be loads of them!

I found oblivion ran like rubbish on my 4870x2 even with the stuttering mod. Since i got my 470 it hardly ever stutters now.

^So far it is running fine for me. I only briefly ventured outside before calling it a day, frame rate was around 65 + iirc with everything whacked up.

I think you have had more luck with your 4870x2 than what i did with mine. BTW you should download oblivion stutter remover. It will get rid of microstutter and 64hz bug which you will get stutter from not matter what. After that you are left with HDD stutter from time to time which can be sorted out with really fast RAID0 set up or SSD's

There are some really impressive landscape mods but they are very memory hungry and if you go with skeleton and clothes mods which are definitely worth it you end up with a very pretty game. Beaches of cyrodil and improved landscapes (?) maybe.

Im just installing FCOM for the first time. Took me 2 days to figure out how to install this huge overhaul. Its a buggy at first but once you figure it out then your away.

skeleton and clothes mods?

The wireframe skeleton if you choose new animations that people have done it works a lot better than the vanilla. a lot of the mods will be on the nexus but some will be to big for the servers so it'll link to planet eldar scrolls. the OBSE might be necessary for some of the gameplay mods.

Clothes and armor wise theres some gender specific packs that give it a more Xena sort of feel, theres a lot of JRPG and anime style costumes around that look good and clearly have had a lot of effort put into them but might be lore breaking.

Nehrim is something you should check out if you are into german rpg's it's a full conversion mod thats had a pretty good reception, The frostcrag mods are good and so is shadowfang keep.

I think there's also a mod where you can use a skeleton as your character model but I'm a little hazy Moddb tesnexus and planet eldar scrolls will have most of the details I should think.

Give Nehrim a go. Great game, but you'll find it doesn't run half as well as Oblivion, especially with mods like Qarl's texture pack.

I can't run at max settings and frequently see drops below 20fps with a 4870 1gb, Q6600 @ 3ghz and 4gb PC8500.

Pleased that you are happy with your new card dude, thought you might be. ;)

On reflection, maybe I haven't been so much as lucky with my 4870x2, more that you have been unlucky perhaps. Anyway, like you said - your friend has it now so its gone to a good home. :D

i play it maxed out full AA on a 768mb 460gtx. Odd occasion i will severely drop fps. Depends where your at. If your on top of a mountain with full draw distance you will drop a a bit.

Qarl's Texture pack!! Makes the game look next gen again :D

I also have: all the DLC, unofficial shivering isles patch, unofficial oblivion patch, bors bed rolls, ren's guard overhaul, illumination within, quest aware leveller, natural habitat, natural weather, natural vegetation, natural water, darnified

I play it near on maxed out (apart from some of the viewing distances I think) on my GTX260.

Don't mod it!!!

You will spend more time faffing than playing!

I got the best experience of this game on the xbox as I couldn't patch it.

Wise words. I remember the months, yes months, I spent doing just that.
I hardly ever played the game, and when I did it was a tense experience - constantly thinking if it would crash or not.

If you are going to use some modifications, don't go crazy.

Perhaps I'll be glad that I actually haven't yet modded it then. I still think it looks pretty good despite being between four and five years old. I was going to mod it late last night since I fancied a game, but couldn't be arsed at that time of night to be faffing with any mod, let alone ones for this game.

Bethesda certainly know how to make an rpg.
