Loved the soundtrack to this, had that Mass Effect tone to it.

The film itself wasn't bad, as above it had enough moments to keep you guessing about what was going on and it looked gorgeous, but the chemistry between Cruise and Olga was just "off" for me and my GF even laughed out loud at some of their scenes together.

watched it last night, thought it was great
the soundtrack was spot on, reminded me of the first mass effect too (moody :))

the setting was very good but let down by the odd landmark sticking out of the ground (we don't need to see the statue of liberty et al, ones enough to tell us the setting)

i've always thought TC was a great action actor and actor in general, he was engaging as always.

the story wasn't wholly original but kept me interested.
laughed at the picture that reminded olga of home, that pose in the field looked painful

It's interesting reading your comments in comparison to some of the reviews on RT... and it's not got a spectacular fresh count as it is :/

The Telegraph gave it 2/5 and the Guardian 3/5 yet you guys clearly rated higher.

This sort of film always gets bad ratings.

That being said I don't think it looked that good from trailers. But you lot seem to like it.

Would you say it would Suitable for a gf who doesn't like classic star trek but does like alien, Pandorum, and new star trek film?
If not I will wait till blu ray

Yes

I don't understand the 2/5 rating. Sure, people have different tastes, but I fail to see why this film could ever be rated below average. Ok, it's not a dialogue driven masterpiece with a complex plot and Oscar worthy performances or a 4 hour epic with an endless list of A list actors, its just a simple, well made Sci-Fi story with a decent cast and solid performances which also happens to be very entertaining. I think critics forget that entertainment is the key factor.

why?

I'm not a massive Sci-Fi nut but I do love some sci-fi films. This one looks awesome from what I've seen and I loved Moon and Wall-E which it has been compared to.

Just got back from seeing this, have to say after going in with very little in the way of expectation, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Looked great, sounded brilliant and a really enjoyable story. A little cliche and predictable but over all very solid.

Probably won't win any awards but a solid 8/10 for me.

A solid 7/10 for me. I thought the music was OK, a bit overbearing at times - seemed very dramatic, even for only mildly dramatic scenes. I'm a big fan of M83 too, but don't think they got it quite right. Also got the 'Mass Effect' vibe from it, especially in the first 20 mins or so.

I kinda guessed the story about 45 minutes in - at least to the degree that 'Sally' wasn't human and the scavs were. Tom's character twice mentioned about us 'winning the war' and it kinda stood out - so i started thinking that in fact we didn't win the war and the resources being taken from our planet wasn't for our own benefit etc. Still, very enjoyable and entertained throughout, if a little long. The tech and drones were fantastic though and world they created was excellent.

And how it Tom Cruise 50?!! He looks about 35.

Yeah, definitely got that mass effect vibe, and some of it could have been exploring uncharted worlds.

And yes, the Tet very much reminded me of glados.

Saw it earlier very solid movie. 8/10 from me not a masterpiece but very well made & acted plus manages to keep the ending concealed until the end you can never quite understand what's going to happen to resolve the story.

Fallout/Portal/Mass Effect vibe to it for atmosphere overall a decent sci-fi drama do not go expecting wall to wall action its not that kind of movie think it will play well with women due to the romantic aspects so its a perfect date movie as well ;)

Okay so.

Non-spoiler stuff:

If you were expecting a shooty pew-pew thing because it has Tom Cruise in... no. It reminded me more of a good-looking indie sci fi of years past - not just eye candy for it's own sake, although like with Tron Legacy, the director has an eye for interesting set design and camera angles/shots, which I like. The first twist I thought was utterly predictable and given away by the trailers far too obviously. The next twist wasn't though and around that point I started enjoying the film more. Given Tom Cruise seems to play 'man working for system, system turns on him, fights the system' in most of his work, it didn't feel much like a Tom Cruise film, which I was grateful for.

There are some lol plot holes that bugged me, and some of the themes had potential to be explored more deeply, but were skipped through in almost a single scene of dialogue, although in some respects I felt like it wanted the audience to reflect on it without it necessarily being said by the characters (which is all very Terence Malick but I'm not sure it worked as well here).

I feel like it came really close to being great... but not quite.

Those with a short attention span and a love of fast editing and rushed exposition will probably hate it. But on the flipside, it felt like it wasn't as deep or clever as it wanted to be so the nerdy crowd (hi) might find it falls short it for different reasons.

Still, compared to the usual dreary Hollywood tat it wasn't bad. A single thumb up, or 7/10 or something from me.

Spoiler-filled bit
It was extremely obvious that the Scavs were human and Tom was doing the alie...sorry Glados' dirty work from early on, however the cloning thing got me good, even though it was hinted with the 'radioactive' no-go zones.

From the moment you see the 2nd Jack has escaped when he comes back down the surface, you knew he'd pop up later in the movie, and the moment you know Jack switched the passengers at the end, you saw the happy ending coming, but that was kind of acceptable given the fact the human race nearly got wiped out. The idea of the self thing was given such a brief going over in the house by the lake scene, it felt like it deserved more exploration, especially given said ending and Olga seemed to be pretty cool dealing with a mind-bending scenario.

The biggest thing that bugged me though was the ending - it just seemed like lazy writing after all that- I was hoping for more than a dumb computer with a red eye:

Glados - wait a sec, you're up to something, can't be anything like when those pesky humans stuck a fuel cell in one of my reactors and blew it up, can it?
Jack - no lol
Glados - oh right, come on in... btw I can monitor you physically from a distance but I'm ignorant you're carrying a dude in the pod not a lady... now come stand right in front of me so I can babble
Jack - oh hai, I brought a big bomb!
Glados - oh noes! Send the drones, but don't fire as soon as you have a visual, wait until you're within an arm's length
Jack - kaboom!

Sigh.

Also, and this is a proper nerd criticism. I'm sick of the idea that aliens would need a planet's resources - you have clouds of water in space bigger than gas giants, belts of rocks with all kinda of elements in, why the deuce can you travel the stars yet not use any of that and instead go to extreme lengths to harvest a tiny speck of rock and water? And for what? It seems a bit crap to need all this energy when you're essentially a giant waste of space robot that's mostly empty space, that doesn't do much except float about. Can't we have something more thought-out than 'need energy, kill all humans via energy-inefficient means'?

Glad some others picked up on the mass effect vibe.

It pentrated everything from the uniform styling, the outrageously spacious ships and rooms (Surely the future would have LESS space, not more.), the attitude to technology and the music. Pretty sure they used the exact same keyboard effects in the same octave as the Mass effect series.

Went to see this last night. Absolutely loved it.

Great imagery, nice story and I liked the soundtrack.

Same problem with my local cinema. Stoker, Cloud Atlas and now Pines are films I would have gladly shed out for me and my girlfriend to go and watch and they failed to have them on, instead showing the likes of a generic rom com for 4 weeks and now Scary Movie 5 instead of Pines. Grrrr.
