Obscure sized frames

I'm after a frame for a print I recently got but it's a bit of an odd size at 7.5x39" (~19x~99cm). I went to a local (independent) framers to enquire about a price and was quoted £49 which is a bit pricey considering the print was less than half that (although it'd undoubtedly be a nice frame). So are there any shops which can cater for a wierd print size for a little cheaper?

That a bloody good price for a custom frame tbh.

I had a 20"x8" image framed - would have cost around £65 iirc - luckilly I know the chap who ran the place so I got it at cost. ;)

Have you thought about mounting it on a standard size piece of mountboard and putting that in a ready made frame? Once you've done it once and realise how easy it is you'll save a fortune on framing odd sized prints.

The set up costs can be a little prohibitive if you're only going to do one but if you plan to do more it is worth it. I got a bevel cutter for £70 but I do a lot of competitions so it was worth it for me. You can get mountboard from hobbycraft or photographic shops and they usually work out around £1.50 to £2 for a 20"x16" which you can easily cut to smaller sizes with a stanley knife if needed.

Let me know if you want a more detailed guide on how to cut the board and mount the photos.

EDIT - Sorry, missed the dimensions of your print at first. You'll struggle to find mountboard that will fit a 39" wide photo as the board is usually sold in sizes up to A1. Not sure if you'll get A0 and even less sure that you'll find a ready made photo frame that will accommodate that either. I think that's probably not a bad price for that size print.

Don't know how good you are at DIY but B&Q sell wood mouldings, some with a lip (rebate) specially for making frames, usually sold in 3m strips. Get a mitre saw and a bit of plywood/hardboard and make your own.

Not sure where you'd get the glass from though - I guess that would be the pricy part.

i'm in the process of making a frame to house a 810mm x 540 mount for 14 No 6x4 prints.

all in all its gonna cost £25 in materials and what ever time i have to put into it so £49 doesn't sound a bad price depending on what the frame looks like when its done.

whitecrook: i'm using acrylic sheet bought from bandq, it doesn't have to be glass and the acrylic is safe as it don't break like glass if the frame falls off the wall!

Doh! I knew I was missing something :) That's good too cos you will have a choice of thickness right down from the thin stuff to the heaver stuff to suit. Out of interest roughly how much is a sq. m?
