Obsidian to be purchased by Microsoft

There will be a couple of years of honeymoon as Obsidian complete current projects then Microsoft will start stripping out IP and farming it off to cheaper "yes" devs and Obsidian will eventually become nothing more than a name churning out shadows of it's previous work and none of the original team involved. It's happened before and will sadly happen nearly every-time a behemoth sinks it's teeth into a smaller dev.

The cynic in me thinks the same, hopefully not but like you said it's happened far too many times before.

Hopefully they are buying Obsidian to gain a reputable dev company that produce high quality, polished games to better the reputation of the store. However the cynic in me thinks they'll simply be consumed and their IP raped.

I was hoping Obsidian would make a new Fallout. It would have been the perfect time as Bethesda are busy with Fallout 76 and a new 'proper' Fallout will be years away.

Don't know what to think, Obsidian with no money trouble, left alone with the resources to do what they do best could be fantastic.

Alternatively they'll be shoving a Halo RPG out the door by this time next year...

Them getting serious financial backing is a good thing however that sort of money usually comes with pressure to get it out the door, also the pressure to change core ideas to appeal to a wider audience.

If they are purely a financial background figure I have no problem with this, however if they start to influence the the games making them more "accessible" to all (for more money, but worse gameplay overall) and limit to the MS Store, I will really question if I buy another title from them.

As I know my "accessible" comment will trigger some people I will expand. I am all for games being easier to access for a wider audience but not if it means dumbing down the experience overall. Citing WoW would be what I mean if that make sense?

Some more news from Kitguru about the purchases, not to much written but there is also two videos that worth watching. One from each company. Hopefully things will work out as each company hoping with joining the Microsoft Family. Guess only time will tell.
