Obviously a memory question

Could i clarify that you have tested the OCZ at 1600MHz without the XMS3 installed?

If you haven't there's a slim chance your MB can't run the memory at 1600MHz.

OK, there's every chance your MB wont run either of the memory at 1600MHz as i'm guessing from reading your previous posts that the OCZ was never tested at 1600MHz(?) - and when you tried it it probably defaulted back to 1333Mhz. So you may have to stick with all 4 sticks running at 1333MHz (i've had a H67 board suffer from this - and that particular board can be fussy. I did a build for a friend and had similar issues - link).

This isn't a problem and you wont notice any performance difference - well you definitely wont as you haven't been running at 1600Mhz ;)

However, you may be able to run the memory with tighter timings and at 1.5V - but i would make sure that things are stable at 1333MHZ at the present voltage for now.

Hi there, sorry I had to pop into work for a small emergency. Have just tried booting my PC up with only the 2 OCZ sticks at 1600MHz, and it failed to boot. "Overclock failed" So I was forced to put it down back to normal.

Memory TAB - 9 9 9 20

Almost certain the memory should be, as described when I bought 9 9 9 24 ?

The PC you built for your friend is almost identical to mine heh. My Mobo has no problem running the XMS3 at 1600mhz by itself, although I havent tried on it's own only, CPU-Z suggests it can

Yes, unfortunately your MB wont tolerate a frequency of 1600MHz with the OCZ - as mentioned earlier it's not uncommon with that board.

I would set the 4 sticks up at 1333MHz with 9 9 9 24 timings for at 1.5V. Memtest it for a few hrs and then run a blend test in prime 95.

Then use and abuse over the next couple of weeks and if it remains stable you could try tightening the timings - but TBH you wouldn't notice any discernible speed difference. Just as you won't miss 267MHz of frequency.

Sorry, i'm a bit confused by the above - are you saying that your MB can run the XMS3 at full spec or just that CPUz shows that the memory can run at 1600MHz (they're 2 completely different things - CPUz is just reading the XMP on the memory)

Sorry. The MB cannot run the XMS3 at 1600MHz either. Tried both 1.5v and 165v with only the XMS3 sticks in. So my MB must not support anything above 1333MHz then?

Just googled my mobo - description of it; 4 x DIMM, Max. 32 GB, DDR3 1333/1066 Memory.

That's highly unfortunate eh...

Some boards have had success at running memory at 1600MHz - but it's just luck/better compatibilty/wind direction... The one i had couldn't run at 1600MHz either but as mentioned earlier you won't miss the 267MHz.

Are things stable at 1333MHz with all 4 sticks installed?

CPU-Z Reading 9-9-9-24 and 686.7MHz. So it's all good. Reading 8GB on my computer too.

My OCZ is 88824, is it possible to tweak timings of the XMS3 to 88824 or would it just backfire again? You mentioned before that I wouldn't see any difference in performance for what I want to do, so I assume there is no point.

I see you've been helping other people with the same problem as mine, must get quite repetitive. Thank you for your help :)

Great.

I would confirm that it's stable at the present settings for a couple of weeks and then if you want to experiment with tighter timings you can - but yes, you won't notice any discernible difference.

No problem, glad i could help. I'm laid up with a bad back at the moment so i welcome the tedium – there’s only so much paper work you can catch up on.

Know the feeling am off work myself. I just seem to buy things...

Hehe, i've done a bit of that too.

To date:

A new MP3 player i don't need but it can store photos and run android (my justification), a few games that i'll never get the time to play (back permitting), wireless printer (needed), a couple of 8gb flash pens (kinda needed) and i'm looking at an Android phone (which i can't justify - yet) and - as i'm finding this 15" Dell laptop literally a pain in the butt to have on my lap - i'm hovering over the buy button of a certain net book.

Bad backs are expensive...

Touche. Haha, so are bad livers. Not only did it cost me a lot to get here in the first place, that includes a week in boozey Greece.

New mouse, RAM, box sets, rugby shorts/boots, paddy power betting, game pre-orders.

Here's an idea, why not get an ipad, that solves you're problem as you can just hold it up to your head, not having to bend over and also you wont need to upgrade your phone as it can text now...

Problem solved. :D

Ah, forgot about the boxsets - i can recommend a series called Dexter (1-4) which i received 2 days ago. Fantastic if you like dark humour and the production is excellent. Not sure about this True Blood boxset my wife got me i find the american deep south accent very annoying (i like vampire movies so it was a nice thought) - but it verges on soft porn in parts so i tolerate the dialogue... :)

My wife has one Steve Job's tablets (nearly bought the HP Touchpad - luckily her job couldn't fund the purchase that particular month because of accounting.) and she has this silly rule that because work paid for it it needs to go to work with her (madness ;)). I think that would have been in my basket by now if it wasn't for 'the rule' but i'm now looking at the Asus Transformer which seems to be a great blend of both.

Perhaps i'll press buy after i've dosed myself up with last dose of codeine and as it's Friday a beer - yay!

Never heard of Dexter, i'll have a google/youtube around and see what it looks like. As for Trueblood, similar to Tudors or Rome, porn you CAN watch in front of the wife or girlfriend in my case lol.

Looked at the transformer a short while back and it does look impressive, highly rated too.

Be careful on that codeine, you might end up with more gizmos you don't actually need :P

Dexter is a ‘crime blood splatter analyst’ (sic) who just so happens to be the most prolific serial killer in the Miami area. He has his own moral code that he lives and kills by – which is worryingly reasonable to me – in that he only kills murderers, child molesters etc that have escaped justice to satiate his sociopathic needs (the last bit you’ll be pleased to hear I can’t relate to.)

Yep, these codeine are a trip (can’t take NSAIDs) – and twice as effective when taken with alcohol, makes you wonder why they put the warning on the package. ;)

Mind you these are nothing to the ‘strawberry fields ride’ that was the Hydrocodon (vicodin) I had last time. I think I would have tried to buy apple the company if I had drank with those and demanded change from my £400.

and now a new 24" monitor :P

Always a satisfying purchase - what did you get?

I have 2 x DELL 2209WA but I’m starting to get the itch to buy the 24” inch version - especially as I don’t use the 2 side by side anymore.

You back fit and healthy yet mate?

It was getting there, and then we went for a relaxing short break over half-term and let’s just say my back wasn’t compatible with the bed at the cottage. I slept on the floor after the first night – much to the kid’s and sadistic wife’s amusement.

I’m mobile’ish now but to console my slight relapse I have since bought the complete Westwing (great series) and tomorrow I’m going to buy a 560Ti as my brother is coming up to visit next week and needs a gfx card so I’m going to give him my 460 at a very reasonable price (as I’m lovely). I can imagine this will be the scenario in which I will eventually upgrade my monitor as his is aging and I think he already has his eye on one of them…

Also bought another kindle as we keep losing one and I never seem to win the battle at getting to read the one that isn’t lost (probably because I can’t move particularly fast at the moment due to my bad back and my wife glorifies in the fact that she can – see, sadistic!). Hopefully having 3 will mean that we can always find 2. But, I have my doubts as I’ve got 8 tape measures and, still, I can never find one when I need one - I suspect the kids have a private stash hidden somewhere in their respective toy boxes.

Oh, and I bought my son a Scalectrix for XMAS (he’s almost at the recommended age ;)) – and obviously I’ve had to test it before it gets wrapped. Plus, we’ve bought him a Tomy GX Buggy (remote control car) that he’s asked Santa for as he almost at the recommended age for that too :). But after looking at youtube videos I’m beginning to wish I had researched it a bit more as it’s insanely fast and incredibly agile. I have visions of it flying across the room and through my TV; it’s a seriously manic little car that seems to be fuelled by Red Bull on steroids. I mean -for Christ sake, I’ve just watched it drive its way out of a bucket from a standing start on a youtube vid – it’s nuts. This is going to have to be an ‘outside toy’, that or Santa may have to take it back and make a compromise…
