OC pre build or build myself

Hi all,

looking for advice on a PC build. I am unsure if to go with a OC pre built machine or build one myself. My budget is £1700 but knowing that GPU's are limited currently and OC are prioritising pre-builds I am not sure which is the cost effective option.

I was in your shoes only about a week ago. I decided to build my own machine and wait for FE drops from somewhere else. Managed to get one yesterday morning and it'll be with me today. Even if I did not get an FE yesterday, I would've regretted going pre-built. Only problem is that the certain place only gets FE cards once or twice a month, meaning there probably won't be anymore stock until Early May at the earliest if going by how often they drop. I planned to use my old GPU so I would've waited it out. If you don't have a temp GPU to use now, then I guess pre-built is the way to go. I managed to bring the price down on my build by getting parts from EU stores and seeing what was on offer at hotdeals. My budget was around 1600-1700, ended up only spending £1500. You can check my thread and see what I bought if you wish.

Anyways, what do you plan to use it for? Any parts from your old PC that you can keep or will use?

Well what I built for myself should definitely be good for 1440p at your budget, but you will need to fight to get a graphics card. Custom build will absolutely be more cost effective for what you get in my opinion, but broken record time, it is not easy to get a 3060ti or 3070 (my recommendation) at all.

An OC UK prebuilt will at least get you the GPU. 3060ti will be just under your budget, 3070 will be a bit over.

I feel like that £110 you're spending on windows could be put to better use honestly. You could step up to a Ryzen 7 5800x for only £30 more. You could go with 32gb ram instead of 16gb. Or perhaps a 1tb sn550 or 750. And seeing as you want wifi, you could go for TP-Link Archer TX50E AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Bluetooth 5.0 PCIe Adapter which is around £40 or £50 for the extendable version from elsewhere.

This one comes with WiFi and also has the radeon 6800 gpu which is about 15% faster than a 3070 while also having 16gb vram so will be a bit more future proof, it’s also a bit cheaper.
