OC UK "PC Retro Zone" Section

Well I run one of the top retro gaming websites on the internet from the Amstrad, to the NES. However OCUK put a complete ban on the website ever being posted here, because... you know.. Advertising my website through retro articles.

Nope sorry, I won't support something I've been trying to work towards on this forum all those years ago :(

Funnily enough your name crops up every time this has been discussed. As you well know self promotion is not allowed, and that would not change even if such a subforum is created.

Yeah I remember that Neil bloke always self promoting on here once he got his own site going, before that he wasn't too bad tho.

If a retro subforum comes up will it be a mix of home computer like spectrum and console like nes. Or one or the other.

You don't need to post articles constantly on a forum when you're discussing retro stuff though do you? Surely self promotion would be pretty obvious?

Nice website just had a quick look but I think the ban is just as much to do with you featuring news about emulators and that talk here is banned. Problem with a retro forum fine talking retro games but the ban hammer swings hard at the near mention of emulation. The easiest current way to play retro titles.

It's not that, he always kept wanting people here to go to his website all the time he even hid a link in his signature to go to his website. He never stopped.

I've had this thought also but nobody has to say anything about what they use to play games or how they obtained them. If this gets opened up, we just need to talk about them like we would every other games console of this generation. No emulation talk, so refer to the actual console you're talking about and don't mention anything about where you got the game unless ofcourse you talk about latest purchases and such. So long as people just talk about the game and console there shouldn't be any issues.

Pretty much nail on head although not going to go into it any further. Hopefully however does not prove to be the stumbling block that prevents this going ahead.

We will ensure that if this happens that some clear guidelines are posted to ensure that everyone is clear about what can and can't be discussed.

The most recent thought was to call it something like "Retro and Hobbyist Computing" to also cater for things like the raspberry pi that haven't necessarily got a great home/presence on the forum at present (and also have some crossover with retro arcade builds etc)

Sounds good, do you think it needs a lot of moderation or not much, do u have enough moderators for it or do u think u might need to get some extras.

Apologies for re-raising or duplicating a previous thread. Thanks for all the responses and i'm glad its not just me who enjoys dabbling with retro PC's and gaming.

I picked up a IBM Thinkpad X31 from eBay the other day and plugged it into a 19" Dell 4:3 screen. It blew me away how good games looked (Nox, Doom) at the right aspect ratio. Even better was getting my old After Dark Simpsons screensaver working. :D

"Retro and Hobbyist Computing" sounds a great idea. :)

Sticking my hand up to add to the yes vote.

I also agree that any retro forum should have it defined as to what retro is. I suggest a rolling pre 15 years ago to stop us old crusties born and bred on Spectrums and C64s, moaning about discussion of Playstations!

the original playstation is 24years old :) 1994

for me retro is prior to the Pentium4. 2000~ ish

Christ I would love this.

One of the reasons I love ocuk is decent moderating, no dodgy links and no self promotion. I’d be delighted if it was here.

Don't think there's a real need to have old pcs talked about is there, it's just old not really retro as all they were are pcs with slow hardware. I mean if you really want to talk about them do so, but what kind of talk can there be is what I'm wondering about.

Tho you can say I guess, amd were better than intel kinda around 1999 iirc and they were first with real multicore where intel went with threads instead.

What else you reckon could be talked about for retro pcs?

Talk about taking your bat and ball home. I didn't know you'd been banned, but this is a classic whiney Neil79 post when something doesn't go your way.

I'd vote yes for this too if it's scope is beyond that of just retro games. Be great for it to cover old kit of all shapes and sizes.

You’re focusing on the hardware rather than the games. The great thing about PC retro gaming is that it’s very accessible.

The only emulator that gets a major feature is the Amiga one, because many people need it to create Amiga Hard Drives and or new Amiga games :)

- Also thank you :)

I wasn't banned, website was... As for whining, according to you that'd fit anyone who disagreed with the higher ups :)
