Don't know if this is the right forum to start this topic but still...

Does anybody else have an OCD with sorting files on their computer?

Audio, Video, Pictures, Documents, Bookmarks, Emails, Software... I MUST have everything in perfect order: perfectly named and organized.

I have to have all of my audio CDs ripped with the sale quality settings... if I download a song, I download all the version from all the known places, then sort through them to find the one with the highest quality, the same with videos.

It takes so much time, I truly admire people who can just throw their files somewhere and be done with it.

Nope. All my files are relatively messy. I download all images, files etc to the desktop by default and simply drag them into a semi appropriate folder a week or two later :p

Don't have a particular issue with organisation, though I guess my directory structures do get pretty big.

I do have OCD over my desktop, though. Can't stand people that dump everything on there and don't even know what half of it is any more. I have 5 links (Computer, Docs, Recycle Bin, Firefox, Outlook) going down the left and links to HDDs, DVD drives and remote locations across in the bottom right.

No I don't care, more important things to worry about. The only thing I do spend time on is naming films correctly so the cover and info shows up in media center.

I a drive called Multimedia, in it there is a Music folder, Moves and Pictures.
The Music and Movies folders then have sub folders... ABC, DEF, etc, songs and films then stored according to artist name or film name.
Pictures are sorted buy catagory, such as holidays, pc, wallpapers etc...

I'm rather OCD about it :)

ye tell me about it, I'm still trying to categorize/organize my 80000+ pron pic collection

don't get me started on the movies either :D

Very much so. Everything must be put in the correct folder, given the correct name and, in the case of audio and video files, a number if applicable. Proper capitalisation is an absolute must for files, but a complete no for directories and file extensions. So for example:

/home/joel/pictures/backgrounds/Background1.jpg

I just can't stand untidy directories. Those people with icons that cover the whole of their desktop really bug me, too. It's probably why I try not to use other peoples' computers :P

I had to set aside a day once just to rename and organise my music into albums. I have a friend who has to make certain everything is uniform 100% like mp3s are artist - album - track number - track name, and tv shows HAVE to be "Show Name season episode quality". He thinks I'm mad cause my episodes are all identically labled lol.

Extensions sure, but why have directories in small case?

I also quality and year to my movie Example:
Alien vs Predator Requiem [2007] [720p.AAC.x264].mkv

My music sorting is quite simple, it's Artist folder -> songs... with album names and everything embedded into the files. I don't rip or download full albums, only the songs I like.

I do this often - however the missus file system is pretty OCD. A bit like the counting of the number of letters in words while people are speaking... this just seems so wrong!

Every file on my machines has a place. It makes it much easier to find things, so I could never just dump them randomly.

All songs are ripped at lossless format, and all DVDs/Blu-Rays are ripped to .MKV. I won't accept any other format, as it'll mess my head up :p

An example of my file structure on my NAS.

Code:
Movies
   HD
     Batman Begins (2005).MKV
     ..........
     ..........
     ..........

   SD
     Pulp Fiction (1994).MKV
     ..........
     ..........
     ..........

TV Shows
   HD
     Heroes
        Season 1
           Heroes - S01E01.MKV
           ..........

           ..........

     American Dad!

I do it, but not because I have OCD, it's because I like everything being neat and tidy and in place, i do it irl too, my desk and desk drawers both at work and home are immaculate. :p

Case-sensitivity is one of the major reasons. And the fact that non-user directories in Linux are in lower-case. I like to keep a uniform appearance across my system whereever possible.

I don't like filenames like that, to be honest. I find that it looks a little messy and it isn't information that I need. I'd love to remove spaces completely from files and folders that I have, and when possible I do, but there are cases where something like, for example, thegoodthebadandtheugly are just ridiculous. But typing:

cd /home/joel/videos/the\ good\ the\ bad\ and\ the\ ugly

Is a little bit annoying at times. Just something to deal with, though. It's rare that I ever actually have folders which have names with spaces in (just lucky, I guess) and with files I can capitalise to break words up.
