Hey erm bit of a simple one, I know you can get octane booster but can you get anything to lower it? or is there something you can pour into the tank that will mix with the petrol and lower it? (not sugar, it still needs to be usable) thanks :)

Well basically my buddy has bought an imported 1988 Chevrolet Camaro, the thing was designed to run on 87PON fuel (91RON) which means putting our 95RON into it is like putting V-Power into a Daewoo Matiz. We figured that by "watering down" the fuel in a way that doesn't ruin it he could save some money with no performance loss.

Yeah I know, buying a 5.0L V8 THEN considering fuel costs, I worry about him too sometimes :P

Seems pretty pointless imo. Unless putting 95RON is going to cause issues?

I don't get it, are you/him under the impression that lowering the octane will produce better MPG?

Just feed it 95ron, it'll be fine. If he's that bothered about running costs then maybe an LPG conversion is an option?

people like you should stop thinking . 95ron is FINE to run in that, it'll run smoother, no economy or performance loss and possibly a gain in mpg.

Running it on a higher RON fuel will not harm it, in fact it will never ever ever ever knock.

Messing with the fuel might harm it, if you overshoot and run it on 85 you might cook the head.

If you do anything at all, advance the timing, CAREFULLY!!

It wont cause issues, but its more the case of the only fuel sold in this country is above what's needed so if its possible to "water down" the mix that would be great, the point is simple saving money by not paying extra for nothing, I would imagine if the was a simple cheap way of downgrading the fuel it might even cover the cost of road tax.

People like you should read the question before posting garbage and quoting the question that was asked. I know he can run it fine on 95RON >.>

*Edit*

Before anybody suggests it importing 91RON fuel from mainland Europe is not an option ^^

Whatever you use to water it down from 95 RON to 91 RON that doesn't cost money in itself, will increase the volume of fuel by so little there would be virtually zero cost saving.

didnt u think about this before importing?

Didn't you think about reading the thread properly before posting?

I guess the theory is that by pouring something in that dilutes it, the tank can be filled partially with petrol and partially with whatever it is dilutes it. But this theory is of course hilarious to anyone older than 13 years old because of course for this to work you'd need something which:

a) Can be added to the tank in significant quantities, which surely would do far more dilution than is desireable
b) Costs less per litre than petrol

Just.. oh dear.

Juster water it down at a ratio of 8:1. 8 parts 95 RON petrol and 1 part water. A teaspoon of mustard oil will help it mix.
