So i got my 2 cards today for my new build and they look superb! Didn't get the Dirt 3 games (or vouchers) with either card, but after some chasing i've been told they will post them out. No big deal i guess.
I was in the market for a pair of 6970's and happened to come across these by chance. I was never going to over clock any 6970 i purchased, but having come across these i am so tempted!!
I have a few questions that i hope somebody could help me solve:
1) Why does it have a 'silence' and 'performance' switch? There is nothing in the manual that tells me what it would be used for:
2) How could i make best use of these switches to overclock my cards to the max stable settings? I have checked the manual for these switches also, but nothing there?!:

I used to keep waiting for the next best thing, but have now realised that just purchased what you want now, as it's the best option at present. If you keep waiting for new products, you will never purchase! Plus, you don't know the exact price point.

i put BF3 to the max and i think it went at less than 1fps
it was like 1 frame every five seconds lol.
although i'm now playing BF3 less than I was and nothing else is pushing it anyway.
will no doubt just be older games i play while i wait for Diablo.
So i'm sure i can wait.. and just spend the money on a new case instead

Nice review. You think I will be ok with a Corsair 750TX PSU? Got a Phenom II (clocked), 8GB RAM and 1 SSD / 2 mechanical HD's.
I take it these are very likely to be able to be clocked to the same settings you have?

I use an 875w Alienware 80+ silver psu. It's made by Newton Labs (same company who made their old 1200w units).
I would say your Corsair TX is every bit as good, as it seems Alienware told a few porkies about the 80+ figures (they're not official nor on the 80+ org website).
They will clock well. Mine? the problem with it was it would not do 940mhz @ 1175mv (stock volts). At which point it's not Lightning spec.
However, do bear in mind that even with the safety switch on you have up to 13500mv at your overclocking disposal to find a nice high clock that is stable.
Me? After a few hours of fiddling I found that 960mhz @ 1250mv was totally stable. And it is, it's been set to that since I did all the testing and I've gamed my nuts off this past week
Completed Borderlands (took 11 hours) got about half way through the single player campaign on BF3 and a good chunk of time into Skyrim too )

Thing is it's actually very good, because it goes from thrashing the core to thrashing lots of other aspects of the card (RAM, different ways of drawing ETC).
So I guess if you get out of that alive you can safely assume your card is stable

Your PC will just lock up, and you will get lovely sharded graphics all over the screen
The way you will note it throttling is when you score 4500 in 3dmark 11 @ 1035mhz when you scored 6000 @ 960mhz, yet it runs through fine.
