OcUK Forum DAC Testing.

I was planning to Sticky a thread for you to post your thoughts in this would allow others to confirm or offer differing opinions. Asus won't be offended. It's an opportunity to get some genuine feed back and give you guys a chance to test some hardware.

Ok, that sounds fair, though how it will work for multiple reviews across multiple items plus comments remains to be seen :D

I'm happy to see any honest reviews too if some of you want to go that far fine. What is important is working out how best to have open discussion without influencing others before they have used it. It would require keeping quiet about things that really annoyed you till the test is over. As to not set the next recipient up to looking for that fault. If at the end a few of you have the same conclusion independently then it would be better.

Would also allow us to isolate problems with drivers on operating systems If person A has a fault no one else had and PErson A is using windows 8.1 and no one else is.

I'd love to have a play with some nice equipment. However, I think I'd end up getting it, taking it apart, sleeving cables, spraying things and attempting to cut windows into things, so I'm probably not the best person to use.

However, why not get the reviews emailed to you after each bit, then just copy paste them after each person has had the product. Then opinions don't get affected and you can still see the review straight away.

I would love to, just purchased a Beresford TC7520 Dac/head amp/pre amp, would make a good comparison but alas my ears have little refinement for the finer details. I also have the Asus Maximus vii Hero with the SupremeFX 2014 on-board sound so I would be happy to post a comparison between the 2 if you would like.

I think headphones ( especially good ones ) should be quite good at picking out dac differences. Speakers are abit harder

Speakers are also very room and listening position dependent, whereas headphones allow you to concentrate on the sound being fed to them.

Completely agree they are hence why I have a designated seat in my house for optimum sound

I miss being able to do that , hence why ive got a good headphone set-up . Headphones are brilliant , but you cant beat cranking up the volume in a house :D And also handy if you have to move around other rooms

I have neighbours but sod them! It's free music for them..... I do listen to most of my stuff on my pc now with my headphones but when the wife is and I crank up the music and dance like a **** to whatever music I want with my daughter.

Tbh I don't have the technical knowledge or an oscilloscope to give justice to each product and give a proper review. Audio is always something that is subjective so I don't think I will probably be of any help other than giving my own "opinion" just like Mad Lust Envy does on headfi.org

However I've not used a dac before and would love to know how beneficial it is for gaming. I currently have the Asus STX and use cPannel paired with an Audio Technica ATH-AD900x. I previously had the Senns HD595 and a pair Of Lindy premium headphones. Prior to that I wasted money on Raccat, Razer, TB and Astro headsets.

Personal opinions are exactly what TwST is looking for, not in depth technical reports.

For pure gaming I would stick with the STX, which has a very good DAC itself. The subtle differences that come with external DACs are really only noticeable when listening to music, plus you'd lose all the positional audio cues that you get from surround sound. The only games that would still give you positional audio are games like Battlefield 4 because it has it's own headphone drivers that basically create a binaural audio stream, designed to sound best when listening in stereo.

You have used a DAC - onboard has a DAC, the STX has a pretty damn good DAC ;)

Nice choice of headphones for gaming, btw!

yes technical reports are lost on most people a forum member is more likely to buy them based on your recommendations than on some technical report

Things I'd be looking for

1. Ease of use is it easy to set up and start using is it fiddly?
2. Sound did you get what you wanted out of it is your current set up better? problems etc
3. Areas you feel it lacks in
4. Opinion on value for money i know it's Asus so it has a premium as is. but they wouldn't be making DAC's worth £1500 if they didn't know a thing or two. question is. Is there £350 worth of kit in the ONE or 300 in the STU or is there an alternative that you have that is better. If so what is it etc.
5. Anything thing else you feel is important to share.
