It fails benchmark test on hd tune says read error ! :(

isnt that normal ide speed? would explain why i couldnt do an ntfs slow format on it ive changed the connector to the purple sata slots on the ds3 im now

18/01/07 made in thailand i think it's definately faulty
fails every hd test application going and i cannot even format it
which stops at about 69-70% done which would tie in with the bad sectors.
That will teach me to buy wd,never again after this experience.
I guess wd have changed their quality control i have 2 older wd ide that have been going for years just fine.I guess things have changed.
The most annoying thing is now i'll have to pay around £10 just to rma a faulty
product so annoying there should be refunded postal costs for things like this.

Duff drives happen all the time - that's what warranties are for. Just be thankful that it died now and not once you'd filled it up.

Go and get WD's own diagnostic tool - there should be a link to it in the sticky at the top of the forum. Run that and see what it says, if it fails it's a definite RMA.

Hehe yea i guess i've been lucky that's my first doa in 10 years.
NO WONDER I COULD'NT FORMAT THE DAMN THING.
:D got to laugh though thank god it was cheap wont be making same mistake ever again though samsung spinpoint t or seagate methinks.

Mine died today.

194gb of datat on it and i never got the chance to back it up :(
I hve a reliable 160gb WD drive which is only powered up when I perform a quarterly backup, and is connected via the USB port.

Nothing to stop you backing up, except for laziness.

Samsung or Seagate drives stand just as much chance of being DOA as that Western Digital drive ;)

laziness isnt the only reason people dont back up, sometimes it lack of money. even with the prices of HDDs falling, i cant realy afford to spend out on a external hdd for backup, and i lack a dvd writer so i cant back up that way. so dont assume that ppl who dont back up are just lazy.

^^ Speaks the truth.

Remember hard drives travel thousands of miles before they get to you. They leave the far east, get shipped to Europe and then to the UK. Once in the UK they are shipped around twice before they arrive on your doorstep.

WD are still the most reliable drives we sell percentage wise but unfortunately there is the odd unlucky few that get a DOA but this can be the same whether you buy Hitachi, Seagate, Samsung or any other brand.

Give the tech lads a shout and they'll be happy to help you out or you can go directly to WD if you wish.

Is it even worth my rma'ing this will okuk send me a replacement like 3 months later? and do they pay the postage cost?
