OcUK Acceleration Thread

These are simple test of 30-130mph, 60-130mph, 60-100mph and 30-155mph acceleration test through the gears.

The way to test is simply accelerate through the gears from 20mph upto 140mph indicated. Change gear as quick as possible and put the power down as quickly as you can.
MOST importantly do not perform this test on UK public roads, because thats illegal, you could get banned, points or even worse jail sentence. It is recommended you seek an airfield, many RAF bases allow such things or if you have friends/family in the RAF normally things can be arranged easily. The other option is pay a visit to the German Autobahn, find a derestricted quiet section and go for it. Again don't do this on UK roads as you risk your license and your own life plus other peoples, BE SAFE people.

Obviously during your acceleration from 20-140mph you need to record this, ideally without having to take your hands from the wheel and the footage needs to clear and un-edited. Then using a stop watch or an online stopwatch start timing when the needle hits 30mph and stop timing when it hits 130mph or whatever test your doing. Testing like this will give a fair comparison like for like test. For example if you just want to do the 60-100mph test then simply video yourself accelerating from 50mph upto around 105mph indicated, again don't do it on UK public roads. For those who want to go the whole hog there is also a 30-155mph table as well.

Obviously many cars, especially older ones will have speedo in-accuracies, but we shall just have to live with these. On newer cars with electronic speedos its not as much as a problem or ones with GPS or proper performance meters. Wheras older cars can be quite a bit out, 130mph indicated on an older vehicle may indeed only be 115mph, but for sake of arguments we shall not take this into consideration.

Ideally the best way would be to organise some kind of OcUK Vmax/Acceleration day at an airfield where say upto 60 cars can turn up, all run and be timed by proper equipment. I am up for this but don't have a clue where to start or how to organise such an event, anybody with the knowhow please step forward. Obviously such an event would not be free and quite possibly not even cheap, but it would be fun.

To be entered into this post a reply with your video clip or a clip of the car you wish to submit and with your believed times, I shall double check with stopwatch and then update the thread.

To start things off I have timed Mattio1980's video clip with online stop watch:-
http://tools.arantius.com/stopwatch

So get posting your clips, I know many of you already have some so post them up and I shall enter them. Also flat roads only please, no downhill cheaters. :)

Heres a vid of just some random vid I did which has a 60-100, be nice to get this off and running.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/l0rdmike/Car/3rd.mp4

Make it about 6 secs maybe even 05.640 and that was with 270ish BHP

Hi there

Well the methods I use for timing which is best I think so all results are fairly done comes out at 5.8-5.9s so I shall update with that m8. :)

Its a shame the road gets so bumpy near the 100 mark, might have to do another one again sometime though. :)

Hi there

Well as per my instruction find somewhere private, airfield or autobahn and just start from 20mph and go upto what your happy with. If you do one video from 20mph upto 155-160ish indicated then from that one video you can extract all the results you want. Fair enough speedos are not best for accuracy due to over-reading etc. but it won't be a million miles out on the lower speed test, just maybe once you get to 130 and higher some speedo can over-read like mad.

My BMW is standard, tyres and wheels etc. yet 60mph indicated is actually truly about 53mph so its quite a bit out, at 100 indicated I'd expect its only actually doing around 88-90mph, but like I say we shall have to accept speedo in accuracies unless we can organise a proper day and get enough attendees. :)

Wheras on the Mustang I took time to calibrate it too GPS as its electronic so at 100mph indicated its actually travelling at around 99mph or a tad over, but on older cars I don't think its as easy or possible to correct them?

Heres a 60-100mph of mine I prepared earlier;) its done a little wrong which is not in my favour because acceleration begins at 60mph instead of already accelerating past 60mph and I start from 3rd and don't use 2nd, but it will do for now.

Not had chance to put the S2000 on an airfield yet

Hi Simon

The video is so hard for me to see but think I've managed to time it at 6.6s area from 60-100mph, would you agree?

Can't get any other times from the video, but what is the car model and power etc. please? For now I've entered it on the list as what I think it is. :)

Was my old Rover prob about 250-260hp at the time I think. Not a great vid as it was only took on my phone.

Just had a look i get 5.5 -5.6. Speedo is numbered 10,30,50,70,90,110

S2000 will be well easy to time, no silly needles :p

Hi there!

I've come up with an idea for measuring the performance of our cars that I'm pretty sure my Stang will come out on top of....

:D :p

Just pulling your leg, I'll be interested to see the results tbh.

no idea what mine is.. not going to attempt it either.

I will ask one question though, of all the people doing it,

and that is..(sorry to put my 'dad' hat on)

Where is your private drive/lane/airfield?

The simple reason is, god forbid, if anyone was doing some of the higher speeds in these tests on a public road and something happened it could be very very serious indeed.

Although the thread has a 'disclaimer' stating do it on an airfield/private land, how many of you actually have private tarmaced land to complete a 60-130 and stop?

These times are going to be completely innacurate, and although there is a disclaimer this could end up very messy.

I suggest this thread be closed until OcUK have a VMAX day with proper equipment.

Agreed,

I think everybody here knows where the "private airfields" really are.

Out on the roads doing this stuff is indeed going to end only one way.

If these questions are answered for you, will it make any difference at all?

Take your dad hat off, get out in your car and get some readings.

Alternatively...leave the thread.

Im actually with Fakesnake on this.

This thread is encouraging irresponsible driving, we all know where people will be getting their readings.

Speeding is one thing, but this is ridiculous. I echo the further comments above about closing this thread until OcUK have a proper airfield day, or Santa Pod type thing etc.

Of course it will make a difference, as I will then have somewhere to do this legally.
I will not take my dad hat off, and I will also not be so irresponsible as to
get out in my car and get some readings.

Why should I leave the thread? Because you tell me to? Behave...

I love speed/fast driving as much as the next man. I would not own the cars I do if I didnt. But doing these so called 'tests' on a public road is just stupidity.

You already know where, airfields....As it says in the OP very clearly.

No, because you clearly have no intention in partaking in this activity and therefore have nothing of value to add to the thread, thus making your presence here useless.

I realise what the OP says, I just think its a half assed get out clause.

I know there is an airfield not more than 800meters from my fields, but If i decided to rag my car up it, I would be arrested and fined heavily.. OR I would be in the path of a FlyBE plane!

If the General public have access to the same as you, the Road Traffic Act will apply. Crack on my friend, just hope no one decides to grass you up when you are ragging your car up a disused airfield.

This would seriously be better done as an organised event. I would be straight to one of those.
