OcUK Official Car Acceleration Thread via gears from rolling start!!

Of course it will make a difference, as I will then have somewhere to do this legally.
I will not take my dad hat off, and I will also not be so irresponsible as to
get out in my car and get some readings.

Why should I leave the thread? Because you tell me to? Behave...

I love speed/fast driving as much as the next man. I would not own the cars I do if I didnt. But doing these so called 'tests' on a public road is just stupidity.

Hi m8

I completely agree with what your saying. Fact is though I doubt this thread is gonna make anybody do anything stupid because those who intend on video their speedo are going to do it anyway irrelevant of this thread or not. Look at the responses already, look how many post there are on this forum of people posting videos are their speedos. I could search this forum for videos already posted and no doubt add several results.

Anybody video their speedo doing such speeds should not be doing it on a public road, not even the M6 toll road. Going past 100mph on UK roads can result in death, injury, lots of expense, points on license, getting banned or even worse jail sentence.

However I am sure people here must have at least one friend or family member in the RAF. My cousin until recently was in the RAF and was often in different bases around the UK. At weekends they often had events where RAF members or a guest would test their bikes or cars on the runway. My cousin is no longer in the RAF but one of his mates got married to my other cousin and as such things can still normally be arranged. There are also a lot of older closed down airfield bases or abandoned ones in the UK. So getting access to one is not as impossible as some people may think if you have friends in the RAF or ring some of the older private airfields that no longer have aircraft landing at them. Close to me their is Hixton air base, now abandoned, not in great condition but people seem to get on it from time to time and mess around, whether they are doing so with permission or not I am not sure but I am sure permission can be obtained if one ask nicely or pays a small fee.

Then for some a drive to Germany to get on the autobahn seems to be an easy thing, quite a few guys here travel to the ring or go for drives across Europe and as such could be an ideal time to video speedo. Again just remembering because its legal to drive fast on the autobahn does not make it any safer however.

Once again this thread is not instructing people to go out and do this, anybody can say no and there are numerous different tables to participate in, not everyone needs to try and hit 155mph and I don't recommend that they try either because in some cars it could be very unsafe to do so even on an airfield. However the 60-100mph table is nothing out of the ordinary, again don't do it on UK roads even though unfortunately I think most people here no doubt hit 100mph everyday on UK roads and without even knowing it.

Also this thread is open to say cars you don't own, so if you have seen a video clip of a car then feel free to post it and I can make a seperate column for none owned OcUK cars to build up a comprehensive list of cars.
For example on youtube their is a video of a Corvette Z06 stock going from 0mph upto 195mph on a US airbase so something like this could be added to help further build the list.

I shall start asking aroud about what it cost and takes to have a proper VMAX day organised with proper equipment. Because I am sure many people like me would love to race against each other from 30-155mph rolls and also get proper timed GPS results from their cars too on a properly organised day on an airfield using proper equipment. I suspect if we had 60 runners all paying so much money each I am sure something could be sorted. Hence anyone who can help please do so.

To be fair to Fakesnake, you dont agree with what he is saying. This thread is going to encourage people to go out and video their car accelerating, because people will want to prove their speeds and flash their epeen around in this thread.

As Fakesnake already pointed out, if an airfield is connected to a public road, and is free to just drive in and use then the Road Traffic Act still applies.

We have seen a case recently where somebody was prosecuted all from posting on a forum about the speed he drove at.

It is blindingly obvious that people are going to be doing this on public roads for the sake of getting in this thread with their 'score'.

If you cant see that well :/, Disclaimers dont excuse you.

Hi there

Problem is here you can never please everybody. On one side people want to see times and submit videos they have either already done or were planning to do at some point anyway.

Yet on the other hand there are the people who are not happy about this or feel its going to fill our roads with unresponsible people doing crazy speeds, in all honesty I thought our roads were already filled with people doing crazy speeds.

So now I've added to the thread another table where people can submit manufacturer times for cars, as long as the times come from manufacturers. Also for people who don't want to do this but happen to know of an exact same spec car where its already been done, they can submit that video too, just make sure you mention its not your car.

What this means we can build quite a large list without people even necesarily needing to go out in their own cars to get something to compare against. For the people who do wish to record their own car well thats upto them to do it responsibly and within the law whilst also not harming themselves or anyone else.

So if you have any favourite YouTube, google vids and know the cars exact specification and model etc. they can be added and will be inputted into the "other & OcUK car list". This will then allow people to go find a video of somebody else in a 530i, or Integra doing the same kind of thing and just post that video. That way they have not had to go out and film themselves but we still get a good idea of what x car does it in etc. etc.

I'm with 'snake on this too, first thing I thought was this is going to encourage someone to do this on a public highway, and if 'only' one person out of everyone does it on the public highway then it's one too many imho.

Some forums I know wouldn't post this kind of thing up due to what it encourages, yet others don't seem to mind. It's like the whole piracy thing, scoobynet for instance seems to leave up posts in their computing section about software piracy, where to download films etc. Just seems a little odd when this forum is so "family friendly" :p

If you do want a run up an airfield Lee than there's an old disused airfield in Smeatharpe not too far away that the chap who runs the Renault garage I go to in Exmouth hires out for the odd day :) There's a day coming up in August :p

How good is the airfield, longish, smooth?
What does he charge?
Because if we could sort the airfield, then all we need is some way of accurately measuring the acceleration, any ideas?

I don't agree if your willing to do 150mph on the roads for this, you have probably already done it on the roads to test the car.

Also unlike most forums, this forum has a dedicated motors section, with many people actually taking there cars to race tracks, airfields ect. A lot of people with the modded cars will already have videos from previous events.

If your not willing to do 150mph anyway, you aren't going to suddenly say oh I need to submit a time I'll go do it anyway.

Gibbo, retime mine please. It's less than 6 :)

Hi there

Done m8, from saying where certain points on the speedo were I am now getting a time of 5.7s so very quick indeed.

Also heres another video clip I've added to the none OcuK cars:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evIozvN5ItY

Its of a C5 Z06 which the guy with the XJR said was no quicker than his XJR, well from that clip it seems substancially quicker indeed, which for a car with the same horsepower as the XJR but over 1/2 tonne lighter and more aero-dynamic you would expect it to be quicker.

Plus a video clip of the newer C6 Z06, much quicker than the older C5 version:-

It's quite long, not sure exactly how long, can get a good head of steam up though before needing to brake :) Surface isn't too good though imho. It's not terrible, but not smooth enough for my liking. the chap can only have it a few dyas in the year I think due to locals etc, I think he charges £20 each for the day but can only have a max of 20 or 30 people I think.

No idea how you'd time it :)

I agree with you on for most of this, but what this is encouraging is those people who have done 150 on public roads to now try and record their antics :) I'm not doubting that a lot of members take their cars on track etc and have the means to do this perfectly legally. I just personally feel posting up a challange like this is going to encourage people to do this on a public road.

Anyway enough of that, how much is it to hire a reputable airfield type placee for a day?
