OcUK Photo Comp - New Judge Applications

On the other hand, instead of competitions there could be a theme less "image of the month" sticky, where people post a few shots and theres an end of month vote, or selection.

That's similar to the very credible and well run weekly comp on POTN. "show me what you've got" where its a rolling weekly submission of entries with no theme, judged by one person. All winning weekly entries go into a monthly pool and then a yearly final. Still, i must say that I didn't agree with the yearly winning shot, but that's just my opinion, plenty of people did.

I see our current problem as twofold: people use the competition (me included) as a tool to get them out there, thinking about photography, taking pictures. It challenges them to experiment with ideas, technique and location.... and then they need to see that effort accurately rewarded. Be it through winning or through seeing a gradual progression/improvement over time. You have to of course measure all improvement with a rigid system and the current points based one on here is as good as any.

The main improvement i'd like to see is a swift turn around of themes and results... perhaps a possible provision for judges anonyomous comments on any pictures that they feel were required, whether it be a nod, for improvement in ability, technique or approach or a "we liked it" thumbs up.

Seeing as i caused this, and because it does annoy me that looking through the two entries for the new comp which were about as predictable as the sun rising in the morning, i think i would like to be a judge.

Why would you want to be a judge if the entries "annoy" you? You're going to mark things down for being "predictable", when the nature of a themed competition pretty much calls for some measure of predictability...

Because thinking outside the box should be rewarded, and i dont think it does in this competition. I knew what the photos where going to be before i opened the thread and i wasn't suprised by some, however others i was, and i think that needs to be encouraged. Lets develop a little bit more creativity here.
