Actually, I think the idea was we were using the game programming side as a device in which to teach people programming. I don't think at any point anyone seriously thought making a 3D game was a good idea (though I think it may have been suggested but the idea got dismissed rather rapidly), we were just making a 2D slot car racer game in Java. The whole thing kind of lost traction, though which was unfortunate as it was going well up to a point.
One thing I'd like to bring up though is in one poll we asked how many people interested in working on the project had experience with whichever programming languages, we got a huge amount of votes for Java, but when it came down to it, very, very few people who really wanted to work on the project seemed to be experienced with Java but at that point we seemed to be commited to working in Java and tried to soldier on anyway.
