OCUK programming project?

== GENERAL UPDATE ==

The chosen language is Java

The chosen concept is Slot Car

Meeting 3 will be at 8:30PM on Tuesday on freenode IRC channel #ocuk-dev

We still need more graphics people on board - and anyone is welcome to join at any stage:)

Before the meeting is due to start.

EDIT: Hopefully you've all read my upadated post on the forums: It's going to be a really decisive meeting this week - and we'll be coding from now on, Decisions on who leads what will be made today so be sure to attend. Really want some of the new comers to programming to be in today!

Hope to see lots of you there :D

Cheers

I've only been back off my honeymoon for a week so only just found this.

I've read the basics on C++, VB6, Python and Java however, i've never actually programmed anything because i've never had anything to program.

I'm really interested in this and will be attending the meeting tonight.

Great to hear this mate, everyone is welcome to join! Looking forward to hearing your comments in the meeting tonight

Project Banshee Meeting 4

Present:
Dangerstat, Lightnix, Zug, Ladforce, Blackvault, [[harv]], calabi, Kev

Agenda:

Training:

Well we had a very limited chat on this. Basically there's no time to write our own notes on how to program Java etc. So I suggested getting everyone to go through elements of the Java tutorial and post on here if they run into problems. So *everyone* go make sure you know the contents of the following thread on the Sun Tutorial:

“Learning the Java language”
“Essential classes” (Can ignore regular expressions)
“Deployment” (Only the packaging programs in JAR
“GUIs”
“2D graphics”
“Full-Screen exclusive mode API”

(For those with Java knowledge - probably the sections on 2D graphics and Full screen mode are needed).

Prototyping

A lot more discussion on this. Pretty interesting too. Calabi stressing an end goal. But at the moment we really need to get everyone just getting to grips with the basics. So we're going to produce a basic protoype - BV and his (non existant at the moment) graphics team will produce some decent graphics for us to use. And then it's up to the development peeps (led by Light and me) to get something basic together in Java.

Everyone needs to strip down the Slot Car idea in to some basic components for the prototype.

Goals?
Well in the short term everyone to get something uploaded to the SVN repo. "deadline" - well lets say a week and a half - upload anything you want - even hello world - idea is to get you using repos to host, post and retrieve code :)

General adminy stuff

Now we have two distinct teams graphics and development - at the moment these'll be led by BV for graphics and Light for development (with me helping light).

End of!

This seems to be a nice project you guys are doing.
I've been tinkering with Java recently, I'm mainly a C/C++ guy, and I like it.
I was wondering if you guys could provide a link to the tutorials you are speaking about?

AHarvey has provided the link in the post below - all round the Sun Java tutorial is pretty good. Though you might want to get yourself a decent reference book (Programming / Learning Java by O'Rielly would be a good bet).

I have only just found this thread, is it too late to get involved?

I work with html/css/photoshop/illustrator but have zero knowledge of Java but am up for learning.
No it's not too late at all, your welcome to join. Just register on the forums and get started. The Sun tutorial should get you up and running quickly.

Glad to see this is still going. Sorry I haven't been able to contribute. As I suspected would happen, my day job and lack of inclination to do much programming outside work hours got in the way.

Haven't done anything in Java in years, and even that was limited to Swing, so might see if I can pop by. Any idiots guides to IRC? (I used to use mIRC but I really can't be having the hassle of going through installing that again).

My suggestion would be to use the ChatZilla addon for FireFox (Get it by doing "Tools" "Addons" wait for the window to open then click "Get Extensions" on the bottom right of the window). When you have it connect to freenode (by clicking on freenode you'll see it's in blue next to a list of other servers). Once it's connected use "/join #ocuk-dev" to connect to our channel.

I thought I'd post saying Programming Fest seemed to go really well. Everyone who was there seemed to follow everything and whilst basic (as it really had to be) we did get around to doing some really useful bits, everyone got a decent introduction to Swing, we got some of BlackVaults graphics imported it was an excellent start, and moreover we got to the point where we could start seeing something come together.

It's a shame more of you weren't there, but Blackvault is writing up a tutorial based on what we went through so there's no excuses for not catching up or having a read through what happened today.

Great to see some code finally, something that looks like the beginning of a game.

Cheers

Actually, I think the idea was we were using the game programming side as a device in which to teach people programming. I don't think at any point anyone seriously thought making a 3D game was a good idea (though I think it may have been suggested but the idea got dismissed rather rapidly), we were just making a 2D slot car racer game in Java. The whole thing kind of lost traction, though which was unfortunate as it was going well up to a point.

One thing I'd like to bring up though is in one poll we asked how many people interested in working on the project had experience with whichever programming languages, we got a huge amount of votes for Java, but when it came down to it, very, very few people who really wanted to work on the project seemed to be experienced with Java but at that point we seemed to be commited to working in Java and tried to soldier on anyway.

Well like all things on the internet it needs a few people to dedicate time to it. And it became clear (at least to me) that the amount of people willing to dedicate a few hours was very low (lots of credit to lightnix and blackvault for their efforts and even skippi for joining in).

For me half way through I just got very very very busy with work. Shame really as it would have been nice to follow it through.
