so whats the deal with 16gb vram when its suffering already at 1440p with its 128bit bus ?
Yeah this is basically the consequence of them getting tight fisted about around the memory bus. Like obviously even the RTX 3060 Ti had a 256-bit bus and that would have been perfect for the 4070 and 4070 ti. But now that level is reserved only for £1k+ cards!Who knows. It is literally the weirdest card in the range to put 16gb on with that bus width. Seems pointless as it is clearly going to be rubbish at 4k anyway.
It would have been far better if they made the 4070 Ti 16gb alongside the 4080, and then made the 4060,4060 ti and 4070 12gb (or maybe even have the 4070 as 16gb as well).
It's crazy to me that an 8->5nm node shrink has resulted in some of the worst generational gains across the low-to-mid range in Nvidia's history - 4090 aside, they've completely boned this generation.

Imo it might just be ok at 4K with DLSS Ultra Performance. The gimping of memory b/w has been very sad to see the past 2 gens.so whats the deal with 16gb vram when its suffering already at 1440p with its 128bit bus ?
wow the gen on gen increase from the 3060ti is pathetic maybe this was meant to be the 4050 ?
Well, it's important to remember that they originally planned to call the 4070 Ti the "4080 12GB" and price it at $100 more. The plan was for the VRAM to differentiate them at retail, even though the reality was that performance was completely different too. When they backed down from that there was little choice but to call it the 4070 Ti instead. The cards had already been designed and manufactured with x80-class pricing in mind (and if you've seen the average 4070 Ti it has a complete overkill, triple-slot cooler with all the bells and whistles), so bumping it down two price tiers and calling it a 4070 wasn't really an option. The actual 4070s generally have much smaller, cheaper designs. It would have been far better if they made the 4070 Ti 16gb alongside the 4080, and then made the 4060,4060 ti and 4070 12gb (or maybe even have the 4070 as 16gb as well).
I think its more down to the naming scheme they decided to go with, knocking everything down 1 tier has done this otherwise it would have been okay.
Yep. They got real greedy.
Everything should be knocked down a tier
4080 - £800
4070Ti - £600
4070 - £400 - 450
4060ti - £250 - 300
Essentially they all need to move to the price slot of the card below them.
Not sure about the 4090 as halo cards are always weird price wise.
That would be a much more palatable line up.
*so farI liked Steve's opener, "the 4060ti is one of the worst launches from Nvidia that we've ever covered"![]()
