** OcUK Tech Labs: Watercooling Workshop - 21/06/2014 - Announcement Thread **

Thank-you for the time spent Rich it was very worthwhile for me. I hope these are viewed as a success and that you can do more. Here's a list of useful tips that were new to me (I was the one writing stuff down as you were talking):

Radiators:
- When speccing a radiator for silence, go for lower fins per inch. For performance go for higher fins per inch.
- A rule-of-thumb for sizing radiators is one 120mm section per component, plus one. So a single CPU would want 240mm rad, a CPU + GPU 360mm, a CPU + 2xGPU 480mm.
- Clean your radiator prior to use with deionised water to clear out the manufacturing gunk.
- Set up your radiators so that the fans take air out of the case.
- When air-dusting a radiator (after a bit of use) - the even-ness of the dust is a good indicator of your fan efficiency. More even = better distribution of cooling over the whole radiator. There will always a a "dead spot" for the centre of each fan.

Tubing and Fittings:
- 'O' rings are critical. Inspect each one carefully. The slightest nick or kink is going to be a leak waiting to happen. A small application of silicon gel from a hardware store (usually the bathrooms section) will help when fitting components.
- Warm the tubing before fitting (a hairdryer, heat gun or cup of hot water). It makes it a bit more pliable so you need less pressure to push it onto the fittings. Especially important when you're pushing down onto a motherboard for example !
- Do not overtighten. Finger tight until you feel resistance is enough.
- a Set of tube cutting shears is a wise investment to get clean edges perpendicular to the tubing.

Filling and Maintenance
- When filling your loop, only fill the res up to half to three-quarters before starting the pump up. This prevents pump kickback splashing the coolant around. Go slow and steady when filling the loop - there is no need to try and get all the coolant in a single pour.
- a 2 hour leak test is sufficient. Anything that's going to go wrong will have done by then.
- Consider strongly fitting a bleed valve to handle expansion. If you are going for hard-line tubing definitely fit one.

A big thank-you also to the Mayhems guys and the bench rig they brought along. I think its fair to say they are two nutters from yorkshire in a shed :) They are also hugely knowledgeable, helpful and passionate about what they do. I see why the relationship is so strong.

I know there were issues with the twitch stream dropping out this morning. Hopefully there'll be enough in the two events for people to benefit.

And finally swag for those of a mercenary nature:
- A litre of Mayhems X1 clear courtesy the nutters from yorkshire
- An OC ginormous mouse mat
- An OC mug
- A gigabyte notepad
- A call of duty scarf
- A creative labs lanyard
- 3 Packs of haribo !

.. and the discount on WC products provided we use it quickly :)

Sorry about the stream guys, our shop internet is capped. Will rectify it for next time.

Thank you so much to everybody that made it down today. Really enjoyed meeting all of you and the workshop as a whole.

I have been told that the discount codes are causing a few issues so if you run into problems with them, please post in the product suggestion forum and I will do my best to resolve it

nice meeting you all just back in (north east). Good to meet every one and rich mate you make a good teacher :). Steve is the yorkshire guy haha

Great write up by Pete too - pretty sure he captured the main points of the day.

Great to see the event supported by the Mayhems guys - their coolant found its way into my basket before ordering, those guys are really passionate about their brand and customers.

I did make one error, ordering a 780ti non reference a few weeks ago, doh!

Still, a watercooled GPU may be the next step after I have mastered CPU cooling and decide a new build is needed ;)

As I said, any issues with the discount code, please let me know in the product suggestion section and and I'll sort it out.

I would also like to thank Rich and the guys from mayhems, I forgot to ask Rich do the gods of watercooling require the spilling of blood to ensure that there are no leaks in your system? I hope your finger heals soon. Besides from that the day day was fantastic I learned a lot not only from Rich but also from the guys at mayhems (sorry I wanted to talk to you to find out your names but missed you).

If Rich plans on doing another workshop I can definitely recommend anybody who is thinking about or is just curious about watercooling goes along, It is well worth the trip, but take a note pad as there is so much information available you cannot remember it all (guess who didn't and is thankful that peter did and has posted on the forum, although I did miss the make of silicon gel Rich used.)

Now I'm just waiting for the overclocking workshop (my kids computers have been stock for too long and I'm too scared to fiddle)

Thanks again to the lads at mayhems and Rich great workshop.

Order placed and the code worked with no issues. Thank you again Rich. A couple of things out of stock annoyingly, but I've waited this long - a little more is no issue.

On tools: screwfix do several reasonable looking pipe-cutters made by Rothenberger (search for 'rothenberger rocut' on their site). I couldn't find the ''kennedy' brand Rich mentioned.

Darned if I can find a small funnel in B&Q or Halfords. Probably need an art and craft shop or maybe kitchenware. I think I'll be looking up in the loft - I have memories of a small funnel that came with some Mamod steam toys I had as a kid you used to fill the boiler with.

Only silicone grease I could see was a WD-40 branded one - the rest look like sealants for use round the edge of a bath.

I feel my man-card being upgraded as I type .....

If you can't find the tube cutters I use the xspc one does the job well. I got mine from CPC.

The grease I use is shin etsu. But any silicone grease will do the trick.
