OcUK TrackDay: Donnington 22nd August - £135!

What an absolute moron, unfortunately had something similar at silverstone myself with an M3. 8-9 laps ruined and i eventually resorted to flashing my headlights at him, too which he finally got the message. Marshalls should have noticed this and black flagged.

EDIT: HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIM

XSP_8886.JPG

I did flash my lights, he took zero notice.

He even came to my garage to brag how we were having a good duel to which I responded, a car catches you up because they are quicker than you and as such you held me up.

Yet he thought he was quicker than me? Hopefully he will come across the video and realise I was having to get out of the loud pedal and brake earlier than I had to because he was in my way. Guy was a moron and dangerous judging by what some others said. But it annoyed me as can be noticed from the video.

I have huge respect for the R26.R I think its the best FWD car ever made for track work, far superior in my oppinion on track compared to the DC5 or lets say they always seem to do better.

I think because you were giving him space he felt he was as quick, which he wasn't, but this is quite common on track days when drivers behind give slower cars space. Next time a bit more aggressive in the braking areas and run very close to his chuff and I bet 2 corners and he indicates to let you past. The fact you were being a gentleman, not wanting to get your car peppered with crap or to get involved in his accident and dent your motor, all of which I full appreciate, was probably the cause of this issue. Next time I'd run on his bumper a couple of corners, he'll soon see who's quicker and move his ass out of the way.

Yeah know what your saying mate, I just hate getting close or being a bulley because like you say the risk increase massively as if I make a mistake or my brakes for some reason don't quite work as they should and all of a sudden I am into the back of him and we know what happens when German cars hit French cars. ;)

There we're a lot of bad manners on that evening, i was pretty shocked by the poor standards of driving tbf :( i'm used to just driving in a local club where as everyone pretty much knows everyone else the manners are excellent.

The old orange/red Porsche and that S2000 were clearly out for a Sunday drive, luckily i didn't come across that R26, but i did almost get completely taken out by a black and orange saxo at turn 5 just before the bridge, he had to completely mount the curb and cut inside me without any warning!

But apart from that it was an amazing track once i got some clear air, i got a few decent pics which i'll upload when i get home.

Yeah I know, the R26.R was quick, no doubting that and I like them a lot, but holding people up is not on. If I see a car gaining on me and I am on it myself, I slap my indicator on, back off and give them plenty of room to pass so I don't spoil their track time. That from what I understand of such event and the rules in the breifing is what your supposed to do.

The S2000 I don't know what he was doing, he did not seem to accelerate, he just seemed to do all the corners at 40-50mph and the straights at 60mph, was a bit baffled actually by how it was driven as they were not even trying to go fast, the speeds they were doing they did not even need brakes.

Slow in fast out would have done him. Houseys tactic works well when I do karting. Sit on their back bumper. They will out brake themselves and you can go up the inside :D

Yeah but again you can only overtake with consent and to be honest I don't think this guy was willing to move for anyone, he just had an ego issue.

Same here, i've seen one driven fast for 1 lap at anglesey before he spun off twice, he was rather slower again after that :p

No offence to the Honda brigade, but I've never seen a Honda driven fast on track.

Seriously I've done a serious amount of track days and been on track with various Honda's, Civics, S2000's, DC2's & DC5's and the smaller DEL SOL things or whatever and well compared to the FWD French stuff they just seem slower.

Infact the only fast Honda I've seen on track was Neil in his DC2 and he was on some kind of death mission and kept spinning off. :D

Anyway

Lets get another booked and sorted!

I am up for the full day at £130ish, who else?

If enough lets create a new thread and get it booked up at Donnington for October time and prey the weather is reasonable. :D

You need more variety i guess. Plenty of quick ones, mark punchards CRX was bonkers at Ccc action days. Richy Voadens lude was epically quick. Limited power means you need to drive well to maintain pace.

Just not girls driving S2000's who don't know about VTEC YO kicking in. :D

What about K20 powered Atom's and Elise's? :D

Those are another story!

Though I think the Elises are very hard to drive quick, there was plenty of Exiges/Elises at Donnington on Wednesday and they were not quick at all, no doubt because they are pretty hard to drive fast.

Weirdly I always see slow Porsches.

Odd though, people say VTECs are slow on the road and are only really suited to the track. Now they are slow on the track ?

You need to come to next one to restore all our faiths that an S2K can be hustled around track. ;)

I was going well as in the whole evening I was only overtaken once by some form of unknown kit car and the only car I struggled to hang on too was a veteran 997 GT3 driver.

Am considering some cups soon and even more front negative camber. :)

I completely accept how the megane was holding gibbo up, did chuckle at the bit in the vid where you highlight how he's slower than you even though he's got slicks, and you're on road tyres....I think the disparity in car performance makes more difference than that, when were talking 911 vs megane! You're driving a Porsche, you should be faster than him with ling longs given the standard of his driving :D

The R26.R are superb, they have all the right gear out the box to be quick on track, sticky tyres, diff, lightweight and easy tune to 300ish horses.

I can tell you a small Lightish hot hatch with slick tyres will have very good corner speeds. Remember slick tyres give a massive speed / grip advantage in corners, you just have to ensure the car won't get oil starvation from the extra G's pulled.

Gonna get some AD08s for my next tyres and try and come to a couple of track days next year...reckon my car should be good fun on track given the above :D

AD08's are not that sticky though, yeah better than any road tyre, but for track work R888's are stickier and full slicks massively more so.

AD08 is great though as they perform superb on the road and are great in the wet too, whereas R888's ain't to great in the wet.

Gibbo did you ever take your S2000 on the track ?

That video is horrible to watch. Just a small clip of the grass and he's gone. Mind you he seemed to realise then yank the wheel to get the car back on track. No surprise though as his lines were awful

No mate, only ever took my Prelude, CSL, 525i and 911 on track from memory.

Hmm ok, maybe I'll pop up and check it out before I put my money down for it. I assume by the fact they are your friends that they are quite handy, so if they can crash then I can.

Oulton is not quite as technical as Donnington, but it's harder to drive quick as there is a lot more things to hit.

That's why Donny is so good, it's technical but plenty of run off and plenty of room for big slides. :D

I fit my 4 track tyres on the back seat strapped to the ISOFIX points for Donington, put an old bedsheet down first and jobs a good un! :D

Still tones of room in the boot for trolley jack, toolboxes etc then.

Also i was properly hooning it around all the corners there and my scooby held up just fine.

Only thing i broke was blowing a boost hose to the dump valuve/boost gauge

Never realised the silver STi on track was a forum member, in that case glad to see you there mate. Your in my videos a couple of times if you watch them. :)

I worry about oil starvation as well :( I tend to take long high speed corners a bit held back to try and prevent it.

If your worried about oil starvation, then why not just do it on your road tyres m8, then at least you can enjoy the car at its full ability on road tyres instead of holding back on slicks?

Plus sovietspybob with the silver STi here was on slicks, his car seemed OK, but admittedly I don't think he was going anywhere near as quick as you would be in the corners. ;)

I was on road tyres actually, Bridgestone RE070's as i tend to come accross them cheap, the whole set on the car at donny cost me £8 :D

RE070 are a nice tyre, very similar to AD08 if I remember, sticky with a stiff sidewall.

Porsche let me get away with MPSS, would still preferre AD08 though, but think I shall just get some CUP's, Porsche are fine with them as they have a Porsche tax added. :D

Yeah otherwise you will feature in a video with subtitles :D

Well learnt my lesson, next time its a drive through pit lane penalty for me when that happens in future. :D

Are you saying you think the AD08s have more grip than the MPSS?

Yeah definetely in the dry, but the MPSS are better in the wet for sure.

Infact MPSS have hardly any more grip than PS2's, but they are a lot better under braking than the PS2's were and far superior in the wet.

A few guys in US run on AD08's for sprints, all show the same, AD08 is better for dry use than MPSS. Then CUPs are the best in the dry bar slicks of course. Don't get me wrong, MPSS is a superb tyre, it offers marginally more dry grip than the PS2, better feedback, better braking, far superior in the wet and most of all it last 2-3x longer for track use than the PS2. I've done 6 track days on my MPSS and about 6000 road miles, still approx 4-5mm on them. :)
