As for 'expensive' , well they are not cheap, but as rjk has pointed out compare 1 to a good gfx card and the price is realistic imo.

Seems excessively expensive for 6 sheets of metal with holes cut into them and then welded together.

I cant work out where the hard drives go in the monticle version .
There is a bracket , but in all of the build pictures ive seen on the net nobody is using them :S .

I've personally never understood the fascination with these things.

To my eyes they are things of fugly and they'll empty your bank account for the privelage.

They look too "home made" for my liking. I'd much rather get a custom case made then get one of these.

I understand the work gone into it but it seems ott to me.
