I only have an SLI motherboard so am trying to go for about fastest setup i can afford....

So i need to choose between buying one 5870 or two gtx 285 cards

I'd guess it will be close but the 285 will probably edge it but cost £100 more sound like the 295/4870x2 all over again lol

What price will average GTX 285 BE when new ATI cards come out.

I mean if HD 5870 is priced a around £290 and HD 5850 around £220. surely the GTX 285 needs to be around £150-£170 to compete. Will that be possible to sell it for such a low price?

Might be a bargain card for a few months, till next batch of ATI DX11 cards come out.

Can I SLI one of these with my 280?

There's a chance, but don't consider that as main reason for buying 285.
Both chips used are GT200: GT200-A2 (GTX280) and GT200-B1 (GTX285). If system doesn't SLI them automatically, so that chance is to flash BIOS in one of them - much more safe is to "process" GTX285.
