This post isn't picking fault with OCUK as OCUK offers excellent value as a top retailer and it is not breaking the rules as I'm talking about manufacturers. In the States the RRP from the major HW manufacturers for any 8800gtx is the same price as their RRP for a 8800 gts here . BTW as we all know the cards are made in China so no excuse there . It is now rumoured that Microsoft want to charge the people in old blighty 1/3 more for the various versions of Vista in terms of their RRP and that is even if you remove VAT , why is the gap that seemed to close widening again?

So you made that big long post, To basically ask why we in the UK sell our GTS's for the same price they sell GTX's in the States.

Answer: Different Economy.

There is a way tho, ship a relative to the US and make him your personal buyer. So when he sends components over, mark them all as gift.

On the scale that OcUK ships stuff in? They may get a little suspicious :p

Rent a flat in the us and move a few OCUK workers to the US and have them send 5 by 5 for each component, leaving 2-3 days gap in between LOL

genius

No , point is on previous products going by the currency exchange rate and adding in the VAT it has been roughly equal price wise ,now though with some of the latest products motherboards,CPU and g80 's not to mention the expected UK RRP on Vista the difference has become crazy vis a vis the RRP in the States on these items, in fact if they tried this there they'd sell sweet FA so this different economy, like it or lump it stuff is frankly, with all due respect BS

Reason we pay more in the UK.

1 tax
2 tax
3 Tax again
4 Stealth tax
5 manufacturers know we will pay a litle more

The reason's we pay more over here are as follows:

1 US prices do not include sales tax as it varies from state to state. British prices do include the 17.5% tax.

2 We are a much smaller economy and don't have such strong competition.

3 The costs of doing business are much higher in this Country. Just look at business rates, fuel & energy prices etc.

4 We moan about high prices & then go and pay them. The Americans take direct & forceful action against them.

To say that its all down to tax misses the point. :p

The only reason we pay the prices we do over here, is because WE do - period! :)

I note the theories above with all due respect, but they are all just that, theories...

If you don't like the prices, don't pay em! It's called a free market economy where stuff finds its own price, and moves according to demand. ;)

1. Right, manufactures charge more here because its a smaller market, shipping from Europe for the small amounts is a lot, insurance and shipping costs for 100 500 quid gfx cards is a lot. So there is one reason, 10% onto base manu price.

2. Tax, lots of it, tax on transport, tax on sales, tax on everything. another 20%.

3. OcUK have to make a profit too.

Yes, this is rip-off britain.

And no amount of whining from you is going to change it. Plus you should be clever enought to look around before you buy.

The way I see it: Sure we pay high prices in the UK, but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. So learn to live with it, end of :)

because, on average.. we earn a shedload more than people do in the states.

In the freemarket economy goods cost what people are prepared to pay, you could have us prices but be prepared for US wages. Wages are lower, houses are cheaper, goods are cheaper because if they were charged OUR prices on THEIR wages they wouldn't be able to afford anything.

PROOF

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/AWI.html

US average wage 2005 $36000 or roughly £18000

http://www.tuc.org.uk/welfare/tuc-11982-f0.cfm

UK overall £23000, 30+ male is more like £26000

This "debate" is tiresome...

Furthermore when people whine about tax, tax and more tax, frankly I'd rather live in a society with a higher tax burdon than live in one with a gaping chasm between the richest and poorest.. I wouldn't trade the safety net we have here in the form of the benefits system for their "tough luck buddy" stance.

Ever see morgan spurlock do 30 days on minimum wage in the US?? No ta, I'll just pay more for stuff if its all the same.
