Hi there

OcUK is now building its own laptops again, but with a twist, you can pretty much configure everything bar the graphics and chassis. So we've gone with the most popular and best bang for buck gaming laptop which is based on a 17.3" chassis and wait for it includes a dedicated AMD HD Radeon 7970M 2GB GDDR5 graphics for sublime performance.

OcUK Extreme P170EM 17.3" LED Full HD Intel Processor, 1600MHz DDR3, SSD + HDD, ATI HD 7970M 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card - Windows - Black

For hardcore gamers the OcUK Extreme P170EM is the perfect choice. There is no more powerful or better constructed option, with the latest Intel Core I7 Processor there is no shortage of power and for those who only demand the most powerful, we can construct the OcUK Extreme P170EM with an Intel I7 Extreme processor too. Though our own in house testing shows the best bang for buck performance comes from the Intel Core I7 3720QM & 3820QM processors, so we highly recommend these when choosing a processor option.

This chassis uses the absolute very latest in technology such as SATA3, USB3.0, Bluetooth, WiFi but the most impressive of all is the fact this system feature an ATi Radeon 7970M with 2GB of GDDR5 dedicated memory for absolutely blistering performance. Infact this is the fastest gaming laptop we sell and more importantly its also one of the best value and offers you the ability to tailor to your exact needs.

With a backlit keyboard you will no longer have problems finding the keys during the dark or whilst playing your favourite shoot 'em up! Not only that but with a choice of colours to suit your environment and taste your notebook will look more stylish than ever!

With a LED backlit 17.3" screen with True HD (1920x1080) resolution games have never looked so good on the go or ran so smooth due to the power of the ATI HD 7970M onboard graphics. The OcUK Extreme P170EM feature a blue backlit keyboard and high quality THX speakers for the ultimate gaming experience.

For memory we only use the highest performance and most reliable for laptops, which is Corsair Vengeance which is set to run at 1600MHz with T1 memory timings resulting in absolute instant response. 8GB is the default choice which is more than adequate for all task and gaming, we only recommend 16GB kit if your also doing a lot of photography work or heavy multi-tasking. Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz will extract the very best performance from the OcUK Extreme P170EM causing zero bottlenecks in the system.

For hard drive options, we recommend the primary drive as an SSD drive, this means from point of pressing power on your should be at the Windows 7 Desktop in approx 10 seconds and with an SSD applications and games load more or less instantly. Of course if you preferre capacity you can choose a large capacity HDD or a Hybrid drive too. Our recommendation is to select an SSD for the primary drive along with a HDD as the secondary drive for storage.

I was wondering when OcUK would buy into these!

Is there any chance you'll be offering the 15" (P150EM) versions any time in the near future?

I must remind you, competitor talk is not allowed or any kind of hinting. :)

It's always been a bit hit and miss in the laptop section with regards to what is/isn't allowed. There's plenty of threads talking about laptops from other manufacturers which OcUK don't sell. Now that you guys are moving into custom laptops, will these all be shut down?

I would be interested in hearing from OcUK on the widely reported 7970M utilisation issue in the P170EM chassis? This is the main reason I am holding off buying one of these.

This really needs to be clarified. The large majority of threads in the laptop section contain information of laptops available from competitors or have mention of available pricing. Considering the limited laptop range available here it will be inevitable.

The entire M17x vx M18x thread has a multitude of posts detailing the prices you can get said laptops for from the outlet.

How are competitors defined in this context? Are Alienware/Dell a competitor as they sell laptops, or are they ok as OCUK don't sell their laptops specifically?

Hi there

Got no problem with DELL / Alienware or big branded laptops.

But others offering custom laptops is a no go or branded laptops we actually sell, like MSI or Samsung for example.

Should be easy to understand. :)

Perhaps a new thread (as a sticky) detailing this is required as it certainly doesn't appear to be widely understood (plenty of threads in the first three pages recommending "custom" laptops).

Or add different MXM cards and sell them as separate options! Heh, would be a dream just to order my components from OCUK rather than abroad!

Gibbo- try a 15.6" version and allow a build based on a gtx 680m and you'll flog barrow loads of them

Perhaps offer more in the way of storage devices and clarify whether a 2nd drive would negate the use of an optical drive?

The 680M is only a fairly minor upgrade (though a lot easier to cool) for a HUGE premium. The 7970 is the "right" card to have in these at the moment. Having the option though is always good.

I would DEARLY like to see some MXM cards on here to go with these. Moving to a laptop as my main rig soon as thunderbolt gets properly supported all round so being able to shop here for parts etc too would be awesome.

Take a look at MSI's custom build offering. There's a few boutiques out there do MSI barebones etc and they're pretty decent. MSI will likely be doing thunderbolt first too.

My basic plan is thus:

Have a single rig, a laptop with GOOD spec (7970m, 2x SSD's raid-0, 1xbig 7200rpm in optical caddy, 8GB, 1920x1080 screen, 15.4") and thunderbolt.

Have a thunderbolt plug on my desk connected to a PCIe to thunderbolt bridge board (with 3 slots when available). In the slots have high end desktop graphics card, decent soundcard (with speakers etc attached) and my raid card hooked to my drives. 24" Monitor, keyboard, mouse, headphones etc etc all hooked in to the relevant cards.

I then keep programs and a good selection of games on the SSD's + the slow drive in the laptop with my media collection and backups on the raid. If I need to be away from home I just pull the thunderbolt plug and walk away with 80% of the power of my desktop. No messing about copying over games/programs/saves/profiles/bookmarks etc. It's still my main desktop setup with a smaller screen, no media raid and slightly less graphics power.
