Surprised that there hasn't been more mention of the fact that the Oculus CV1 goes officially on sale as of next Tues in a variety of UK retailers, at last 2 of them being high street chains.

I had a DK2 recently. Wasn't that impressed, in particular with the SDE (screendoor effect), which I found pretty much impossible to ignore. Still an amazing experience in DCS, but annoying all the same.
I'll certainly be trying to find a store who can show a CV1 to me on demo, such that I can judge for myself about SDE. What I've read on the net is that it's massively better in the CV1.

Anyone else?

It is better - whether its very noticeable (the SDE) varies from person to person.

Elite - dont notice SDE
Subnautica - dont notice SDE
War Thunder - dont notice SDE
Project Cars - little bit. Not as sharp as above (regarding distant objects)
Euro truck Sim 2 - same as project cars in this respect sde tad more noticeable

Yeah, have mine on preorder from the rainforest since early August. Can't wait - don't have the space for roomscale and it will be used for racing sims only, so it was an easy decision to go with the Rift.

War Thunder look amazing. What's it like to play? YouTube videos look good but I'll bet using the headset is incredible.

Very smooth lots of customization. Great detail on the planes and the lighting and graphics. Heres a test flight i did only 3 minutes but its very clear and instruments are very readable in the rift

Thanks for posting the video mate, it looks good, so tempted to get one this week, what GPU are you using? Thanks

A G1 Gaming GTX980 (got from mm here actually still going strong) I wouldnt get anything lower than this for VR tbh.

Something ive been wondering about (and deciding what format to display VR videos in)

When posting VR videos should i display it in Oculus SBS view or mirror from the monitor view?

If i display it in the former is that a more accurate representation of the VR ie including any VR artifacts? But then when i recorded some war thunder in oculus sbs (see above youtube vid) when i post to youtube the quality is not as clear as when i am in the rift (ie when i am reading the instrument panel in game it is very very clear but in the video not very clear at all)

Or should i only post it in Oculus view if i want people to actually watch it in a VR headset?(cardboard, vive, oculus etc etc)

edit: after chatting to a more experienced VR chap i think i will do another war thunder video but not in SBS mode. SBS is mainly to let those who actually have some kind of vr headset watch your video in VR but everyone else is buggered.

I'm sure i read johnlewis will be selling them, i'm hoping they have 1 on display since theres a shop in glasgow city centre.

I had a look on their website. That was suggesting that it'll only be on demo at their Oxford st store.
For all that, they operate a returns policy meaning that you could happily buy one, test it for a couple of weeks, then return if you don't get on with it (assuming it's still in perfect condition).
No clues as to where I'll be on Tues...
Just pre-ordered. Apparently I can collect in my local Waitrose.

Can't believe there aren't more demo sites - if this is as good as people have said, they will sell so many more.

I'd really like to try one and I'm sure if my wife had a go she would be more sympathetic to my desires !

Looking to get a 2nd hand 980ti for the MM or might just get a 1070. Still contemplating the headset.

Do you get it tomorrow?

Demo of Rift at London

Vitualrealitystore at Camden North London are doing demos of the Rift and the Vive so that you can do a direct comparison. I am having a demo very soon, but then I am in London.

The Purple People have the Vive on demo.
I took the Mrs to our local, since she didn't see the merit in hiking to OCUK-HQ Newcastle, and she was sold on it there and then.
I doubt we will afford it within the next decade, but she's still 100% on board!

Picked mine up this morning. Haven't had it up and running for that long. Had a quick play in DCS and a slightly longer session in ED.
The visuals are clearly better than the DK2, to the point where I'm happy with that.

ED, utterly fabulous. Awesome feeling of piloting.

The only downside I have at the moment is how tight the headband is. Makes putting it on whilst wearing glasses a bit of a practiced art.

Do you need to wear glasses with it? Does it not have variable focusing?

No idea about the variable focusing, I'll do have a look.

The headband issue was shall we say "user error". I was in such a hurry to stick it on my noggin, that I hadn't spotted the really obvious velco ties on either side of the unit that can be used to give some comfort room. Still requires the right technique to put on, but that's only to avoid my glasses. Otherwise, it's spot on.

Initial thoughts:
- Visuals aren't perfect. Suffers from "God Rays" and the resolution still isn't on par with my monitor. Being fair, the resolution is more than acceptable
- As I was putting the unit on and off a number of times, I personally found it hard to keep the the combination of glasses and lenses clear, which results in smudging of the image. I've put a good micro-fibre cloth next to my desk to see if that resolves
- SDE is MASSIVELY better than the DK2. Sure, hasn't completely eliminated it, but it's at a point that it's easy to ignore
- Couldn't really tell a lot of difference on comfort to the DK2, though others do. Does feel like I could happily wear it for a good while.

Tried it with the following:
DCS. Just fabulous. Should be sold as part of their software kit
Elite Dangerous: Awesome. I understand why this is the top recommended game for VR. Amazing feeling. Weird when the fingers in game move whilst yours don't.
Assetto Corsa: Didn't rate this at all on the DK2. Hugely better on the CV1. I owned an AE82 when I was younger and took out the Ae86. Driving is MUCH easier than say on a monitor, and the interior really does feel as naff as the AE82 did.

Looks like this one will be staying.

Edit: Just found out that a group called Mocreo are selling lens adapters, for which you could buy a pair of cheap prescription lenses, then mount into the CV1. Trying to find a UK stockist at the moment.

Update, and this is cool.

Found a thread by a person who's designed a 3D printable lens adapter.
Link is here:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1602460/#files

These take 40mm diameter standard glasses prescription lenses. So basically, get this printed, amble down to your local optician and job's a good un'

Then found a fairly local service who can print them:
https://www.3dprint-uk.co.uk/3d-printing-service

The quote from this printer came in at £16.40 per unit (in black). Unfortunately they have a minimum spend of £40. So my thoughts were to order 3. One for me, one as a spare and one that I'd probably Ebay.

Ah, the joys of technology.
Any want one?
