Today (11th October 2017) at its fourth developer conference in San Jose, Oculus announced its newest and most affordable VR headset, called Oculus Go.

The standalone device will ship in early 2018 starting at $199. Without a cable or the need for a mobile phone, standalone headsets represent a totally new phase of VR hardware.

Oculus Go also ships with integrated spatial audio. The speakers are built right into the headset, transporting you straight into VR and making the headset easy to share with someone else.

If you need it, there’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack for private listening. Gear VR and Oculus Go apps are binary compatible, and they share the same controller input set—that means developers building for Gear VR are already building for Oculus Go. As an added plus, the best of Oculus mobile VR content library will be available to everyone on day one.

yeah, I don't get it either
You don't have to have a specific branded phone and it's cheap compared to a something like a GearVR+compatible phone. It's an affordable entry point for people who want to play about with VR and doesn't need any prerequisite hardware. Stick it on your head and go.

except if you don't want to spend $400 on a phone/contract then you probably have a $200 phone, plus this is $200, so you'd end up spending $400 anyway, so why not just get the better phone to begin with?

There's an argument there certainly. I certainly know people who are over the whole thing about owning an expensive, or even moderately priced phone. For me, if I wanted a mobile VR headset, I'd go with this. No need to mess about taking a phone in and out, and no running down your phone battery while using it (battery will probably last longer as it isn't permanently connected to network).

Would probably also be better for kids who want a headset, unless they've been spoiled rotten with a higher end phone that they really don't need.

If I was interested in this kind of VR I would certainly buy this over upgrading a phone and getting a GearVR (at £100 anyway).

I'm still rocking an iPhone 6 and very happy with it.

You only need the phone to set it up though. You don't have to use the phone ever again. So you don't even need a $200 phone, any phone that can connect to the play store will do. And I know you can get those for less than $50. You don't have to look for a phone when you want to use it. I can see why people would be interested in this.

I mean most people have a phone, not that they need a phone to set this up.

What's the motion like? Can you move forward and back like the usual VR headsets?

I used the gearVR for about five minutes, it was a faff setting everything up. This could be interesting, although to be honest, at £200 it's almost psvr territory......I do like the fact it's a self contained unit though with no cables.

I fall into the group that might get the Oculus Go over a better phone. A £200 phone is useless to me and I don't want to walk around with a £200 device outside the house. It seems far better to keep my cheap phone which does everything I need and get a Oculus Go. I wouldn't end up spending £400.

to be honest, I just wouldn't recommend getting an oculus go, mobile VR is complete rubbish
I got a gearVR for free with my phone and haven't used it more than about 30 minutes, I should've sold it while I could've gotten £50 for it

I can't help but think that devices like this (that people are more likely to buy with a lower entrance price) are going to do more harm than good to VR overall
