Oculus Rift - Grey Veil effect

Hi Guys,

Got a Rift for Xmas what can I say ....amazing :)

However I do have one issue on dark scenes such as the Lost animation. With dark backgrounds I get a dirty screen / grey mist type effect which is really obvious. When the scene turns lighter is goes away.

I thought it was just one of the downsides of an early technology but after reading this

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/com...1_black_veil_on_image_something_like/d5thcdg/

it seems to be an actual fault? Do I try and get a replacement and run the risk of getting a worse unit?

Does anyone else get the same issue?

Lost is really bad, Gunjack very good and Elite somewhere in the middle for example.

I appreciate there doesn't seem to be much interest in this However is that because nobody has seen this issue before or is it just accepted as being a limitation of the technology?

I've found various other people with this issue online but it's far from everyone. I have a few days left to return it but it's a concern it will have the same issue or worse I.e dead pixels, un even screens.

It's really just looks like a film grain on the back of the lenses only visible in dark areas such as Lost, Dreadhalls etc

Thanks

Sorry, I haven't noticed this myself. The problem I have with the Rift at the moment is that the sweet spot for viewing is very small. Have to take a little time to get it sitting right on my head, otherwise I get slightly blurry, film grain effect. Maybe that is what happening here? That the headset isn't on right? Try adjusting the headset in a dark game and see if anything changes. Even try adjusting the IPD?

Thanks for your reply but it's not a focus issue the screen clarity on mine is very good apart from this. This is fixed all over both lenses.

I think I'm going to get it replaced just to be sure.

Shame to have this issue as it's a great bit of kit.

If you have issues with the sweet spot try bringing it further down I found this to make a big difference.

I have exactly the same effect, And like you wonder if its worth trying to replace this for a new unit and hope to get a better display.

Have you decided what you are going to do?

I have it but it doesn't bother me. I'm not surprised to see it to a certain extent anyway as you are in an almost pitch black enclosure with no outside light source to help. Its no worse for me than having a tv or monitor on with the lights off. You see the inconsistencies of the panel/backlight.

I dont think its an issue to worry about and getting a replacement I doubt would make a great deal of difference unless you have extreme uniformity issues. Companies cant even put out £1000 monitors without the possibility of there being issues with the screen tech.

Personally I think the rift is a pretty decent and well desgined bit of kit that for first gen consumer product is a pretty big step in the right direction.

Thanks guys for letting me know it's a strange on as I initially thought it was just one of those things but then started reading and thought it was just a minority.

It's a bit like googling you symptoms you always end up with the worse case scenario lol

Just to add to this the following post shows the issue really well

https://forums.oculus.com/vip/discussion/37842/two-and-a-half-problems-with-my-cv1

Scroll down to the veil section and photos 3 & 4 show left / right eye with the issue. Unfortunately for him it's worse in the left lens. My issue is slightly worse than photo 4 right eye.

Anyway going to keep it and enjoy it !! Will be upgrading to cv2 / vive 2 anyhow!

I will be staying on the vr train as long as poss so I personally look forward to future vr tech, providing it has enough people interested I hope for a bright future in vr but its still early days.

Just enjoying my cv1 as much as poss and soaking up what the vr is all about.

Im replacing mine tomorrow. A friend at work has said that his is nowhere near as bad as mine.

I will let you know if there is an improvement

Its there in all sets to one degree or another.
I think it is because oled struggles in very dark greys. The reason the developers tend to use a dark grey is because of response. The oled pixels respond quicker than when they are off (black). Do in a lot of cases the picture will smudge. So they use a feature called SPUD. This doesn't allow the pixels to fully shut down.
I read a few people who had a severe veil were given a program from oculus support that allows them to turn spud off. So they lose the veil but now have other artefacts.

I tried with the SPUD setting off last night (not the tool but it's only a registry key that needs to be created - I can post for any interested)

It made zero difference for my issue :( I tested it again last night using Dreadhalls and even the wife said it's not right so I think mine is on the extreme end of the scale.

She's on the way back from JL now with a replacement so I will update once I get a chance to test!

Any marked reduction will be most welcome not expecting it to go completely. Fingers crossed!!

OK quick assessment still there but much better. Less immersion breaking as the effect now sits in the background where before it was up close breaking the 3D effect to some extent. Lost is still a bit pants but Dreadhalls had no banding in the grain. The main menu I had to focus to see it where as last night it was in your face.

The IPD screen (Green Cross) shows the right lens is slightly clearer than the left but I'll need to use it more to see if this matters.

Will test again later but first impressions are improved still not perfect but I think I'll be able to look past it going forward.

Hope it's not MK JL they will think somethings going on lol

I have just picked mine up, but wont be able to try it until later.

Not MK so we are safe I think :). I dont think its possible to get a perfect display as this is the OLED Mura correction that is baked into the headset, but it shouldn`t be like looking through a dirty window!

I hope I got a good one.

Just tried my new rift,

Much better, infact very similar Dillinga where the effect is much less pronounced. a quick test in chronos showed that things were better as this was unplayable before.

I'm sure that my original headset did a firmware update when I installed it and this one hasn't, so I wonder if the first one was from old stock?

I thought the grey veil thing was in every rift to more or less extent?

I get it if i am looking at a completely black screen. Other than that i dont see it.

However i do get sometimes a double vision effect thing. Hard to describe but each eye "cone" or view (left and right) is supposed to merge perfectly to form one image right? I sometimes see mines overlapping and it certainly brings me out of the immersion.

Anyone else get that?

IT is, but mine was particularly bad, more of an "oil Stain" rather than the grey veil.

The new one I have is about 70-80% better (subjectively of course)

I certainly dont have any issues with the lenses converging, what are you seeing this effect in?
