Oculus Rift Review

Try it for yourself
It's ****ing awesome a very promising future

It's almost like you haven't read my posts at all.

"DK2 (owned for a few weeks), a very brief test of a HTC Vive and a fairly lengthy test of Gear VR."

"I wish the low resolution was not a big deal for me because the experience of flying a plane with VR is absolutely stunning. So I envy the fact some people like yourself can look past the resolution issues."

Resolution IS a problem IMHO as far as my tests and experience shows. That opinion may be subjective but it is enough to keep me from investing until higher resolution PC VR units are available. The experience of VR for me is stunning and apart from resolution concerns I would be all over it and fully believe my issues will be resolved with newer tech.

Gear VR in comparison to Vive looks dog ****. The resolution seemed to me to be a lot better on the Vive, also better than the DK2.

I was hoping for an Oculus stand at Gadget show today but there was not one. The amount of cheapo VR stands was ridiculous.

Great to see the amount of people queueing up for a demo of the Vive, Gear VR and also buying the cheaper product offerings. This is only going to drive up the sales of PC hardware and software which can only be a good thing. Hopefully many more developers as people shell out on £1200 PCs in order to be able to use the Vive and Rift

I've been having a lot of fun on the Gear VR yet the res is terrible. But that's only £50 and you kind of get used to the low res after a while. Although it is hard to read a lot of things and I would never watch a movie. But the overall experience is great just for it putting you into VR worlds.

If however I was spending over £500 on a headset AND having to spend a lot to upgrade the PC and still not getting res a great deal better than the Gear VR, I'd be disappointed. Which is why I think I'd wait for future VR gens. I want high res. That said, I've no experience of DK2, RIft and Vive so it might actually be better than I'm being led to believe.

One of my friends was of this opinion too and doesnt have a PC and isnt into tech really at all. He tried the Vive today and said "I have to get one" He thought it was literally 10 times better than his Gear VR.

I think people will only know once they have tried experienced it - A game with the Vive using the hand controllers or using the Rift with something like Project Cars or Alien Isolation

That does sound promising if it's that much better than the Gear in terms of resolution.

Well, I know people are going to tell me just to try one and see for yourself, but there is nowhere near me to do that.

From reading the reviews so far it seems that the technology will be awesome, but it's just not there yet. It's a lot of money to spend on something that's not quite ready. In fact the more I read, the more I think the first round of VR will be like a giant beta test.

It's a bit like 3D, sorry don't gang up on me and say it's nothing like 3D. I am not talking about the tech, I am talking about people's reaction to it. People were saying it's awesome, so good, etc. etc. game changer etc. The initial wow factor was soon replaced by the annoyance having to wear glasses, the poor reduction in picture quality when you went 3D etc etc and for most people 3D has become something seldom used.

Now I know that the wow factor will be much bigger with VR. And I bet it's amazing to see. But I do see a lot of people complain about the resolution amoungst other problems. Little issues, these little issues, tend to be ignored in the beginning as the wow factor is in full effect. But 6 months down the line, those little issues could be all consuming!!

Not saying that will happen of course. But, reading the reviews so far has a put a slight dampner on things for me. So I won't be ordering anytime soon and am going to give time for the technology to mature, maybe consider buying for xmas if things are going good.

Apparently the delivery issues are down to poor manufacturing QC and a large percentage of the early batch have been fitted with defective lenses which cause the flaring (godrays). Facebook are keeping this under wraps and denying any issues exist.

The words cluster**** were used and this alleged employee feels it could be a month before they get it sorted.

If true, not a good start for a premium priced product.

It says April fools at the end and posted 1st April

The article ends with.

All said, they are not communicating well, whatever the reasons.

Lol, seems I'm a tool for not spotting that. Though I wish it wasn't an April fools joke because then at least there would be hope the excessive glare/godrays/light beams would be fixed. It now seems it is actually just part and parcel of the entire experience.

Premium parts used my ass. The real fools are people expecting the Rift to be a premium product considering the premium price.

I agree 100%

We see this time and time again with technology. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon saying how awesome it is. 12 months later, the same people are saying it's rubbish but v2 is awesome :D

it is what it is at the end of the day

3D isn't really comparable, because it didn't allow you to do things in games that weren't possible before.

That makes a huge difference to the sort of games that will be developed over the following years. The main factor is the presence it brings, and this is something simple stereoscopic displays can't do.

He did say he was not comparing the tech just using it as an example of the hype.

It too am a complete VR fanboi but can still see the flaws in it and am genuinely scared that games and apps will stop being produced for it and I'll be left with some very expensive goggles in a dusty box :)
But I'll make the most of it whilst it's new and shiny and will force everyone I know to try it out.

I'm concerned as well that VR withers on the vine if new games (or some decent ones) don't support it. However, if my headset continues to work with Elite Dangerous then I'll be moderately happy.

I got a 3DTV, not because it was 3D, but it was a good TV for the price at the time. During the time I was buying, I had looked at 3D demos, and thought it was cool, but I didn't see any longevity to it. It didn't add to the experience much, and half the time, it was detrimental in a home environment for multiple reasons. I never saw anyone who was blown away by the technology and the possibilities it brings. I am more looking forward to experiences on these devices than I am games, things like Apollo 11, or the Titanic when ever that gets released.

Ah you read my post at least :p

I am complete tech fanboy!! Always want the new gadgets, but this time I am trying to be sensible. I hope that it succeeds, I really do.

I like your plan, give everyone you know migraines and motion sickness :D

I really liked the idea of 3d tv....

Unfortunately the implementation never really sold me on it. I tried to love it, but I couldn't and the 3d glasses just ended up collecting dust in a box somewhere. I don't think it was helped by the fact that they charge a stupid premium for 3D blurays.

I'm much more excited by the idea of decent VR though... so excited I not only plunked down the money on a stupidly powerful PC, but also on the rift itself and a T300 GTE and thrustmaster warthog plus MFG crosswind pedals.

To me the mere idea of being "in" the car/plane/spaceship is just awesome. I'm willing to overlook 1st get woes to get that experience of being in the game.

The Project Cars developer Slightly Mad Studios is working on a redbull air race game that seems to have been built with VR in mind - with the warthog and crosswinds that's going to be mind blowing imo.

VR holds way more promise across so many different fields, not just gaming. Engaging education experiences, real-life training applications, therapeutics such as treatment of PTSD (and looking at battlefield etc, probably creating some PTSD too lol), virtual tourism, live events, giving bed/house bound people a means of escape.... the list goes on.

I can't see it going away... as mentioned I really wanted to like 3D TV but I knew it was never going to catch on really given it's limitations. VR gives me a totally different feeling about its future.
