Oculus Rift w/touch - £350 - Is now the time to buy?

Well, despite the fact I've wasted quite a lot of time trying to get my XBox controller working in Project Cars or Assetto Corsa without any luck, I've been stupidly impressed just sitting in a few stationary cockpits. The controller problem probably saved cleaning my own carpet though, because after a reboot I did manage to get the controller working in Elite and discovered just how disorientating and downright disturbing motion can be. It's... such a weird sensation.

But tootling around gently is amazingly immersive, and hovering in the shadow of a huge ice asteroid is genuinely awe inspiring. The sense of scale is something I've never ever had on a monitor, no matter how many flawlessly antialiased pixels it was composed of.

However it's the two setup/tutorials on Oculus and SteamVR which have blown my tiny mind most of all. They are wonderfully crafted and genuinely delightful. I'm sure that a lot of this novelty wears off, and many of the 'experiences' won't last. But it's impossible to deny that I've had experiences today that I've never got close to in 40+ years of gaming. I started off with Pong on a black and white telly and now I'm in V-space giggling because I just blew up a balloon.

Life is strange. And wonderful.

And I need a new video card now. My 20% overclock is fine in VR/3D but started causing nasty jittering on the desktop. However up to that point the 7950 had coped manfully (other strong genders are available) with everything I'd thrown at it. I haven't fiddled with any graphics settings at all. Maybe I'll live with the jittery desktop. After all, 2D is so last century! :-)

Robo Recall... thank me later

Haven’t had that much fun in a game in a decade.

Space sims seem to be worse for motion for some reason... I tried the one where you’re drifting around in a space suit on a space station... adrift maybe i can’t quite remember the name... that made me want to vom after 15 seconds. Was the first time I’ve ever experienced motion sickness. None of the other games do that to me, including project cars or other ones where you’re walking around instead of teleporting.

How is the picture quality on the rift? I tried the PS4 one and it was very grainy, so much that you couldn't even see small/medium sized text.

Looks like most of the deals have ended now :(
yeh I guess it was Cyber Monday yesterday and that was that...

Looks like I will get one for XMAS then. Hoping that the price will be reduced again or maybe even lower still given that the Windows headsets will be more commonplace.

Steam: The Lab, 'nuff said.

Ok, not 'nuff said. Robo Recall failed to install for me last night but just now it did and I spent five minutes just throwing robot limbs around! In combat I kept dropping my guns or failing to reload, but I was too busy grinning to bother working out how to do it all properly. And yes, I definitely jumped at the start!

I'm also reluctantly converted to teleporting. I've always thought it's a ridiculous cave-in to the current limitations of VR, and would ruin the immersion for me. But it's like the low res thing... who cares, just let me get to where I need to be!

This is ridiculous. I used to worry that I'd enjoy this too much, because it looks so sad and isolated from the outside. But this really is our first step into The Matrix, and to be honest I'll be quite happy in my pod, generating a bit of energy for our AI overlords, just as long as they keep improving the resolution on my data jack.

Oh, and I really need to make my VR area bigger! My desk has become a warzone and I managed the rookie mistake of bashing my forehead when bending down to pick something off the floor. Serves me right for turning the guardian stuff off. :) Still, at least I only bashed my head, not the Rift.

I had immense fun with this today, lasted a whole lot longer than I thought I would before I felt sick.

Had a good go on GORN which is hilarious fun but I did end up punching a wall twice haha.
Also Pavlov VR which isnt quite build for Oculus and does need 3 sensors, graphics were terrible but it was pretty fun.

The guardian system never worked for me oddly, no matter what I did it just didnt want to work. o_0

I bit the bullet and got it for £350, even with prime it will take 4 days. Already have a couple of games which I bought in the steam sales.

Rec Room is great with a few people (suggest doing some of the quests like jumbotron). Star trek is a great social experience too.

The motion sickness does pass, and oddly enough I found elite dangerous to be just enough that I could handle it, while still being able to enjoy it. From there I just played games like Rec Room, robo recall, and echo arena and suddenly my motion sickness was cured and I could play free locomotion games. The point is that you shouldn't push yourself too hard or you just won't want to play. Racing games were a big no go for me until recently.

Half an hour ago I discovered that my controller was working in Project Cars. So I started a short race and was pleasantly surprised. After the first corner, into which I felt distinctly weird, I found I was too busy racing to feel anything except excited! The only problem I had was remembering to breathe. :)

I managed a couple of two lap sprints at Watkins Glen, then two laps of the Nordschleife! The elevation changes make these tracks a whole new experience even though I know them like the back of my hand, but although there were a few moments where bumpy sections unsettled me, I seem to have escaped unscathed.

Race starts are the worst bit; probably because of the transition between being stationary and on the move. But maybe years of sim racing have given me a head start, or perhaps my duff left eye helps? And maybe I'll get cocky, spend too long in Assetto Corsa next and spend the night regretting it. Or maybe I'll just go rip a few robots apart instead. Robo Recall is as good as advertised.

Edit: Ok, so Dirt Rally is seriously impressive... and a serious source of motion discomfort. Hardly surprising really, given the nature of the tracks. I got almost as uneasy as when playing Bejewelled in Hugeovision using Bigscreen.

Edit2: Gordon Bennett! Lucky's Tale made me feel worst of all! Impressive to see it running (all these things have to be seen to be believed whether they're short term novelties or not) but I think my head's not ready for this.

God yes, I bought my Rift in the summer sale £399, it’s best piece of technology I have have ever bought, since owning it I have only played 2 ‘pancake’ games (football manager and pubg), non VR games don’t interest me anymore, VR has ruined me as gamer

Haha, my advice is to stop the moment you feel any motion sickness. Leave until the next day, then try again. After about a week I was immune. At first id feel queezy and take an hour break till it subsided, then back in. I guess it wasnt long enough.

Has anyone bought a 3rd sensor? If so did it make a difference.

Yes it made a difference. However, when I went 3 the roomscale was in experimental mode. It has since been improved. I recommend trying your 2 sensors high in opposite corners facing each other. Some are lucky and get perfect tracking.
If you can't 360 without controllers floating etc, then you will know that 3 will be a nice step up.
