(Okay so the thread title of where i posted this first was probably not that good.)

----

As I am really after 4GB of DDR3 memory for my 790i (when i get it), (as I don't know how I would cope with only 2GB with vista and crysis et al), I have been looking into the slightly cheaper modules available.

This includes the "OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Platinum (2x2GB) Dual Channel DDR3 (OCZ3P13334GK)"
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=8&subcat=923

Would this be 'compatible' and stable with a Striker II Extreme, and is this pretty good RAM for the money? The latencies are really high!!

Thanks

i've got this kit on my 790i ultra (before the MOBO died:mad: awaiting RMA replacement)
The ram itself is very good, i've had it clocked to 1600Mhz at cas9 1.925V (only 0.025V over rec and 20% oc'd so would easily go faster with little effort i guess)
runs warm to touch but not hot,

*****IMPORTANT DOWNSIDE******

Only thing is the memory is rated 1.8-1.9V. OCZ's memory chip doesn't like passing this info to the 790i chipset (they insist this isnt a fault! just a known issue!!!)
As such my 790i wont boot with bios in default and this ram in situe :(

If you get this kit, be prepared to get hold of a small cheap 1.5V module (OCUK dont stock anything this low spec -my solution is a 1.5v 1066mhz 512mb stick)

Intially boot with this to get into the bios to change voltage to 1.8+
then reset, remove crappy ram and insert new ram.

Other than that its been rock steady, and was not the cuase of my MOBO failing... that was XFX's latest bios release failing on me... but thats another issue.

This is really useful information. Thanks.

I don't know whether this voltage issue will be the same with an Asus Striker II Extreme? But I am guessing it will. I will search around on the Bay for some cheap DDR3.;)

Anyone else around that has some review about this ram?

Just reread your post (i only answered the title lol)

if you're refering to this (first link led to OCUK homepage)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-109-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=923

Then yes as i said should be fine on any 790i
As for high latencies, its DDR3, so you get twice the bandwidth as DDR2.
Its therfore really difficult to directly and accurately compare any two DDR2/DD3 modules as you have three factors that effect the overall 'speed'.

Also considering you've got an intel processor, the latencies are less of an issue than if you had an AMD. intel processors deal wiht high clock speed, high latency memory better than AMD and vis versa.

cas 7 on ddr3 is very good at the moment, and as i said in regards to speed/latency its difficult to compare. if your overclocking you can push this kit quite a bit. and 1600mhz at cas9 is FAST! lol

thanks again. Probably will get some of this stuff then, as it seems 'reasonably' priced comapred to other DDR3 4GB kits. I can't see better DDR3 4GB kits coming down to the £100-£200 mark for at least some time to come.

How are the latencys high (slack) ?.

I aint going to repeat so will quote my last post on topic.

Quoted :

" You cant compair the Timings on DDR to DDR2 to DDR3.

Fastest DDR was Corsairs 400mhz 2:2:2:5

I think thats about the same as DDR2 800mhz @ 4:4:4:4:10 (Mushkin) and DDR3 1600mhz @ 8:8:8:8:20, you can get likes of DDR3 1600mhz @ 7:7:7:7:18 (G-Skill). "

So 7:7:7:20 is not too bad although its only at 1333mhz.

where can i get hold of a cheap stick like this mate? as i have the XFX 790i with the RAM listed in my signiture and it will not boot past the XFX screen. is this the same problem you were experiencing? if so is this lower voltage memory usually the answer?

Got mine from crucial (think i can say so because OCUK dont stock anything this low spec and so are not in competition... awaits correction!)

However what you are saying doesn't sound like the issue i was having, I just got 'C1' post error and beeping (indicating memory fault).

I'm not saying your problem doesnt have the same cause, but its not what i experienced, so i couldnt say if a cheapo 1.5v stick is would solve it!

i wouldnt know what else to suggest, other than check everything is plugged in properly, heat sinks mounted well etc, jump the bios, and if all else fails you could try the cheap stuff, and if everything fails, RMA the mobo.

You could also contact XFX for help, (xfxforce.com and register account and serial number) Although my experience with them was polite, but not ideal for a manufacturer who's primary market is enthusiasts, i got asked if i had my pc switched on at the wall....

lol. thats nice of them. :D they must think everyones a right pleb! well i've ordered the new memory anyway, i'll probably end up needing it anyway. but anythings better than RMA'ing my board for a 2nd time. :(

I have the 2GB version of this kit. Works fine in my S2E. Even at the default 1.64v the board puts through it.

I can't overclock sod all on this set up though, but I figure it's just me / bad component.
