Okay, so I set up my new rig this weekend. It's the first build I've done in about 3 years so I'm half expecting that knowledge gap to be at play here but here is my dilemma...

Having successfully installed Vista (I know...) onto my SSD, it soon began to behave temperementally. Windows insisted that it needed to be installed but this could only be achieved by booting from another device.

So, I installed my old SATA drive, put Vista on it, ran the OCZ installer and it still refuses to install it.

It's usually at this point where I'm told it cannot be installed (even if I run the firmware installer or hope Windows might find it automatically) and after which, when rebooting I'll get a quite BSOD where it then reverts to the beginning of the boot process before asking me if I'd like to start in safe mode, etc.

If anyone could point me in the direction of some basics that I'm quite probably missing out then I'd be very grateful. I've seen some talk of AHCI and I'm clueless as to the importance/meaning of it.

Thanks!

what do you want to do? install vista on the ssd?

if you set the sata ports to ahci mode in the bios you might need the ahci pre install drivers on a usb memory stick to install when the windows vista install prompts you

I think only win7/8 install them automatically for you

if you mean the ocz drive isn't showing up in windows or during the install you need to plug it in and boot into the os from another hdd and initilize the ssd

click start/right click my computer/manage/storage/disk management and initialize it or creat a simple volume on the ssd, then it will show up in windows and you can install your os to it

Thanks buddy, I'll give that a shot this evening and get back to you, very helpful indeed.

Yes, I was hoping to run the OS from SSD. Knowing that they install without a hitch in W7/8 is really tempting me into getting one of them, it's been such a headache trying to solve this!
