Need a cheap 120/128gb SSD for my work laptop as HDD is a bit too slow with boot and loading times. now I know OCZ drives didn't use to have the best rep for reliability.

My question is have they improved in reliability over the past 2 years? and if not any other cheaper SSD brands that you could recommend?

I have bought about a dozen or so OCZ drives and i've found the most reliable have been the Vertex 3 120gb drives.
I've had 4 of the Vertex 2 / Agility 2 60gb ones fail and go back for RMA.

Dont think you'll go wrong with the new Intels or the Samsung 830/840 series.

i cant find any 830 series anywhere and 840 pros cost too much for me to spend on a SSD for a work laptop. Intels are way too much aswell.

so let me get this straight anything after the Vertex 3 drives should be OK?

Well, maybe. But given the previous generations were flaky and OCZ are at risk of going bust, buy from a different brand. Crucial M4 was popular a few months ago, may still be a reasonable choice.

Try to determine if other people have used the same laptop you have without problems (google "laptop name" + "SSD name" + problem). From what I have seen, problems with OCZ mostly seem to be "drive not recognized" or "disappeared".

i agree with JonJ679. ocz are desperate to survive. they claim a 5 year warranty on their latest drive but it might just be a sticker to sell the drives before the company goes down. they probably know they won't be around in 5 years to honour any warranties heh...

pay a tiny bit more and get a real brand. ssds are shaky enough as it is. they're not cheap enough to be mainstream yet and there are already far too many dead ssd reports.

Wow, didn't realise OCZ were in trouble.
I have another dead Agility 2 60gb. I'd better get it RMA'd quick smart.

OP, you could also try the Kingston drives, had a few of them. Not the fastest, but didn't have problems with them.
Remember you laptop will almost certainly only have sata2 controllers, so you only need a 3gbit ssd. Cheap a chips now.

yea its sata2 already checked, I haven't come across any problems online with my laptop I've looked at Kingston SSDs but haven't compared the performance of there different series drives anyone have any recommendations on which series to buy?

In the last last 7 months I've had 3 Agility 3 drives one lasted just over 6 months next one lasted 9 days the most recent last less than a day. I'd say stay away.

I got a 60GB Vertex2 for a mate when they were £30, it died about a month later, its been replaced with a Vertex3, so far that hasn't died (been running for a week now).
