OCZ Vertex 2e seems slower

My Vertex 2e is coming up for a year old or so. Not had too heavy useage but it seems to be getting much slower.

When I first bought it the boot welcome screen only flashed up for half a second or so. Now it is around 15 seconds and after that I get a black screen with the mouse pointer on it for 10 seconds or so before the desktop loads up.

Is there anything I can do to clean up the drive and get it going faster again? I am on firmware version 1.27. Should I update it?

I had a brief go with their toolbox updater but I just got a message saying that it was going to shutdown my computer because it is my primary drive. It shutdown and nothing happened...

Any help would be great :)

You can do the update using parted magic also. There's a guide on the OCZ forums and it's easy enough. Then try leaving your system at the Windows logon screen overnight to allow the drive to do it's idle time garbage collection as it's called. If your still having issues then it might be worth doing a secure erase which can also be done with parted magic and then a clean install.

have u been logging off atleast once aweek for 5hours+?

Cheers very much for the replies guys. I guess I will give logging off a go tonight and see if that makes a difference. Now that you mention it I do remember hearing about that. Not been doing it though :o

If that does not fix it then I will do the firmware. I did get the impression that the toolbox should be able to do it even though it is a primary drive (it specifically states that primary drives cannot be upgraded if they are vertex 3).

Gareth - when you get that message what happens next? For me it shut the computer down (not restart). I waited 10 seconds or so and powered up again. When I checked the firmware version it was the same. Do I need to do something in BIOS?

Backup entire drive (NOT just a partition, you need to keep partition alignment in tact), secure erase drive, restore image.

Fresh speeeeeds.

Thanks Dragon. I'll give that a go if the idle time garbage collection doesn't help.

By the way, does any one know if I need to change my power settings when doing this. I assume that in balanced mode my drives will all turn themselves off after a few minutes if they are not in use. Or does the garbage collection count as use...?

I believe that the drive will NOT do it's garbage collection if Windows power saving turns off the drive after a period of inactivity.

Turning power saving off on SSDs is another of the recommendations on the OCZ site.

Easier said than done when the power management options only make reference to HDD's :D

Plus you are not able to change the setting for each drive individually and I don't want my HDDs running all the time. I guess I'll just turn power saving options off when I am letting it do the garbage collection.

Thanks for the help guys :)
