Odd 3870 problem?

I can overlock my 3870 pretty hard, it'll run several sweeps of 3dmark06 without a hitch. I can even push it further and get a little artifacts but it still runs the complete benchmark.

However, in CoD4 with even a slight overclock the vga hangs?

That can't be right surely?

Just wondering if it's because I'm running it in a PCI 1.0 slot on an old S939 mobo?

My AM2+ system isn't quite ready so ignore the sig, still being built.

standard benchmark mode doesnt really push the card that much . its a fair bit older then cod4. if you can run 3dmark in demo mode put into highest res and highest aa, then it will fail for sure if theres any instability ;)

Faulty 3870?

Stock clock on a brand new system build and it freezes in CoD4 after 10 seconds if that!

Brand new, OS, drivers, CoD4... death.

The stupid thing is *** 3850 before it ran CoD4 perfectly fine on the same driver set! :x

HELP!

lol... ive heard of worse.. i've heard of a kid gettign a pcie card and "trimming the connections" to make it fit an agp, now why wont that work?.. dust?

Don't be morons please. It's clearly a typo.

I can only assume it's a duff card, pciE1.0 on old system and pciE2.0 on new system both show the same problem.

Yet both are entirely different from the ground up.

I'm going to install Gears of War tonight after work as see what results I get.

For the record the stop gap 3850 ran CoD4 with ease which makes me think the new 3870 that I replaced it with is 'dodgy' somehow.

One thing I need to find out is how fast my PCIE bus is running, the bios doesn't actually tell me so I'll get sisoft or similar tonight to interrogate the board.

I will check my card tonight for you. Have a s939 rig with a 3870 and COD4...will try clocking it and running the game (as been absolutely fine...in fact GREAT at stock at running COD4).

Guys you do realise the 3870 WILL NOT clock past 860Mhz on the core and that will cause it to lock up ;) That is pretty common knowledge so if thats the problem its the same on every card!

It's currently running at stock dude, I even tried dropping it below stock!

I might have an idea of what it is, will investigate when I get home - I just hope it isn't a borked card.

Same problem here mate.

I have nforce 4 on a Asus A8N-SLI board with a 3700+ San Diego. When I run COD4 it plays OK for a few minutes and then reports a VPU recover has taken place and crashes. I've not clocked the 3870.

Like yourself I'm building a new rig based around x38 and E6850. I've also got another 3870 for crossfire. Am going to swap the two cards around in the old S939 setup this evening and see if the problem follows. If it does then I doubt its a faulty card.

Completed COD4 last night on the 3870 just fine (with everything at stock no CPU overclocking either).

Do you want me to try overclocking the GPU and see if that affects the game?
