Quick question, I've been receiving a number of calls lately and as soon as I answer I get the dialling tone. 1471 says they do not have the caller’s number. What could it be and is there a way to stop it?

HAVE YOU ONLY JUST OPENED YOUR EYES?!

This has been happening for years to everyone.

Its not saying "The caller has withheld the number" just "We do not have the callers number". So take the crap elsewhere

Don't call centres set their phones to call loads of numbers all at once. Then as soon as someone picks up they scrap all the other calls. Hence your call is one of those. I think.

Or you've been pranked. But that's a bit obvious.

That would make more sense, it's not pranking as it would say the number was withheld.

What crap? If 1471 dont have the number - its withheld. Hence it wouldn't show on caller display. I think you need to chill.

Well crap threads get crap replies. ;)

Everybody gets them, it's either kids messing with you or some type of call centre and no longer has any use for you being on the line.

This is utterly false.

The number is withheld by the terminating exchange. So they do have the number, but with-hold it, if it says the caller withheld their number.

If the number is not available, then there is NO CLI with that call. Not that there is but its been with-held, simply that there is NO CLI. It may be a call from abroad, initialised at an exhange which does not support CLI, etc.

But would these numbers appear on a caller display? I know from my own experience many international numbers do not. So for all intents and purposes the number is withheld from you.

yep as mentioned above it definately sounds like them idiots trying to sell you things with there auto dailers.

I had a big problem with these idiots we would get like 2-10 of these no one at the other end of the phone calls per day.

I signed up to this free internet service which blocks out such companies from doing this, im not sure what it was called now though if anyone can point him in the right direction i think it would help a lot.

No.

It isnt with-held, it is NOT AVAILABLE. There is a difference - the key difference being a with-held number is one somebody has deliberately tried to hide from you, whereas an unavailable one is not...

Cant you contact BT/Whoever and tell them that you want annomous (sp) calls rejected.
Thats what we have and if u try to withhold your number and call us it wont get through, not sure if this would stop calls where "they do not have the number to return the call" as opposed to "the caller withheld there number"

Anonymous Caller Rejection wont stop them all. Sales companies and collection companies can usually bypass them. the Telephone Preference service can usually help though. 08450700707, its free.
