Posting for my mate here

He bought 2142 brand new the other day and the dvd just doesnt get recognized by the drive :s

ALl other disks work fine however!

He's on Windows 7 if that makes a difference.

I used to get problems with my DVD drive being recognized as a CD drive and used reg mechanic to sort it but this is diff

It may be simply a faulty disk.

He could try updating the firmware for the DVD drive.

EDIT: Has he tried the game/dvd in another machine?

Faulty disk is one possibility and a drive problem is still a possibility even if it can read other disks OK. Trying the disk in another PC would tell you which it was.

I've had the same thing with my Samsung External DVD drive, wouldn't read the Modern Warfare 2 dvd, have a spare LG external, put that on and it was fine. But other DVDs/CDs did work in the Samsung one :)

CD works in my drive, so update his firmware? any pointers on how to find out the make/model?

1. Look in the hardware manager, maybe it does display a model number
2. Open the case and look it up ;)

You might like to post the model number here too. Someone might spot a problem, especially if it turns out to be an older model.

Optiarc AD-5170A (P-ATA)

Updated the Firmware to 1.14

If he has the cd key you could simply download an image of the dvd/cd from bit torrent or newsgroups and mount the image as a dvd/cd using alcohol.
