Odd issue, can you help me find the problem?

Hi all,

Hoping you can help as I'm a bit thrown off with this one...

I have been having an issue recently, have not altered anything and settings are the same as they have been for months (see sig for my spec).

Lately my PC has sometimes been randomly losing display whilst playing games, and I'm having to hard reset.

Sometimes the PC will load up just fine, other times it powers up but does not post and has no display, however sometimes it boots up just fine and I can use it for a long while before these issue start to happen again.

Any idea what could be causing this? Can't seem to pinpoint the issue, I was originally thinking the ram is on its way out again as I've had a set of these fail on me in the last couple months.

Just a bit confused how it sometimes boots and posts but sometimes doesn't post (no beeps either). Issue seems random and can't seem to link it to anything, doesn't seem to matter whether I'm oc'd or not as I have tried both.

I've ordered a new set of ram that will arrive tomorrow but I'm not too sure if that's the culprit tbh.

Have any of you experienced anything like this before and if so how did you fix it? Or have any ideas for me?

All help appreciated.

I had similar issues back when i used AMD, it was due to drivers normally. Have you tried removing your GPU overclock then running DDU and installing the latest driver?

I'm running the latest crimson driver, but surely a GPU driver would not sometimes prevent the system from posting?

I have now removed the gpu overclock and will test to see if it happens again, but wouldn't have thought that a GPU overclock would sometimes prevent the system from posting as the gpu overclock is only applied once actually loaded into windows? (Using trixx)

Removed the gpu overclock and fully removed and reinstalled the driver and still having the same issue, after rebooting the system failed to post and has no display...

I just don't get how it sometimes boots up fine and I can use it for hours and sometimes it won't post or I randomly lose display when playing games...

I left fallout 4 running overnight to put a bit of constant load on the gpu and it was fine, started playing for a bit this morning and fallout randomly closed to desktop on its own with no error messages, and I then rebooted the system and it failed to post again...

Very strange! I'm now thinking it's either the ram, cpu or mobo....

Any other ideas for me to try?

All help appreciated!

When you removed your bios over clocks on the cpu and mem did you just hit optimised defaults? If you did go back in and set XMP because some ram doesn't like the optimised settings and causes system instability until you set XMP profile. I know this wouldn't have caused the original instability which could have been a dodgy driver update or some thing but it can add more instability while your trying to sort the first problem out so its worth a look.

As for the original problem, if it's not GPU I would try taking out one stick of ram and then try them one stick at a time, maybe your memory overclock was too much for the ram and it's become unstable over time.

i've said it in a few threads, but the new AMD drivers have been causing similar issues for me (aside from the POST issue). I would try rolling back to 16.7.3 and see how you go.

I have tried with both XMP and without, issue still exists...

I replaced the ram modules with a new vengeance pro set and the problem still exists so think we can safely rule out the ram as the issue.

I'm now thinking either power supply, mobo or CPU.

I will remove the graphics card and try running from onboard for a little while to see if the problem still exists that way, if it does then we can rule out the GPU.

Any other ideas please let me know, appreciate all of your comments.

Cheers

Ed

Try taking the motherboard and PSU out of the case, just in case there's a screw or something causing a short.

Replaced the PSU with an EVGA 750W GQ to test the problem, so far so good I have not had any issues with the display cutting out and system locking up, and no issues with the system not posting either, its booted up perfectly every time so far!

Early days as the problem was intermittent so it's bit tricky to class this as the fix, however we shall see over the next couple of days!

Will update you guys in a couple of days time to let you know if the replacement PSU fixed the problem!

PSU didn't fix the problem :(

Removed graphics card and run from onboard also.

This means that problem must either be the motherboard, CPU or hard drive, pretty sure this will likely be the motherboard.

The joys of trial and error!!
