Odd issue with the Volvo..

Hi all,

Past couple of days my S60 has developed an odd noise.

It's a high pitched squeel that goes as I press the clutch down and comes back when I come off after a gear change. It seems to get a little quieter at higher revvs.

Am I right in saying it could be something simple? or is it more likley to be the slave cylinder/release bearing or something more expensive to bring me plenty of butt hurt for the new year?

I've tested the clutch and it's not slipping/stalling.

Edit: It does also disappear if I just lightly place my foot on the pedal?

It can do, a siezed or disintegrated bearing can destroy the pressure plate as well as leaving you unable to disingage the clutch

I had this happen (clutch not disengaging)... accelerating onto the A417 from a side road then discovering you can't select a gear is not much fun! The opposite may happen to, you may end up stuck in gear with no clutch function at all!
 
My slave cylinder is going on my S60 and it's quite a big job to get to it, book time is 6 hours. I've got to decide if while they are changing it I should get the clutch/DMF changed too. Slave cylinder is £90 and labour is £350, but if I want to do the clutch/DMF as well it's another £600 in parts! Car has only done 55k miles so clutch and DMF should be fine, but then I'd kick myself if I started getting problems a few months later with them.

When the bearing finally gives up, you'll have no clutch. That's about all that can go wrong.

Save up for a clutch kit and release bearing and do it when it fails.

If you've got a bit of common sense you don't need to be stranded when it fails, you can still drive it. You just need to learn how to change gear without the clutch and stop the engine at traffic lights. :)

I only mean in the short term. I'm working till xmas day and chances are garage aren't gonna get me in till new year.

You're almost completely bolloxed though if it breaks and you're stuck in fifth at the time though?

When the slave cylinder Fiesta went I broke down down on the A417 near the Hot Air Balloon pub, no amount of pumping the pedal would get enough pressure back to get the clutch to release....didn't even seem possible to get the car out of gear no matter how much yanking of the gearstick I did as I coasted to a halt...even stationary with engine off I could not change gear by the time I stopped.

I managed to drive so far in an effort to limp home, with the car stuck in fifth gear, them someone pulled out in front of me at the Birdlip junction, had to do a near emergency stop and it was game over :(
 
Clearly you need to learn how then as it is possible to change gear up and all the way down the box without the use of the clutch what-so-ever.
The reason you couldn't get it out of gear is you didn't blip the throttle, this would have allowed the dogs behind the synchro to disengage.
 
You're right of course, didn't think too much at the time, not sure how starting it up in fifth gear would work though having not tried before :D foot flat to the floor and hope?

Rocking the car back and forth whilst pulling on the gear lever would have got it out of fifth. You probably stopped on a slope so all the transmission forces were acting against the dogs, not a chance of pulling them apart in that scenario

When at lights.. Engine off, engage first, crank engine as lights change green, apply throttle. EASY :D

Yeah it was on a slope just up from the Hot Air Balloon, I was facing downhill at the time...bad times. Fingers crossed it won't happen again, slave cylinder does seem slightly chocolate on these cars though, the cars in its third now :(
 
Forgot to update. :o

Went home on the 23rd. Got off the motorway put my handbrake on because I was in some traffic on the sliproad, Clutch pedal remained on the floor :( had to get towed to a garage :(
 
Probably just anecdotal, but my 2001 v70 cruise control stopped working, turned out it was a failed clutch pedal position sensor. The sensor failed because the clutch master cylinder was leaking into it.
The bill at an indie volvo specialist came to about 500 quid, but that's including a new master cylinder, new sensor, full service, and 40 quid computer diagnostic.

Probably the slave gone. Mine is leaking and what happened to you is when it completely goes. £500 to change the slave, but while the gearbox is off may as well get the clutch and DMF done, £950 all together.
 
Echo that. If your gearbox ever has to come off you are bonkers mad to not change the clutch at the same time unless its nearly new.
