Odd Opera Problem

In the past couple of weeks or so I've encountered a problem with Opera. I'll occassionally use opera, then close it via the cross box at the top right hand side, go off do something then come back, open up opera again and it'll come up with the error message :

Opera is being used by another session, please close down before attempting to start a new session (or something similar)

So i go into task manager and sure enough there's opera.exe in the list of processes using up 25% cpu usage and about 22,000k.

I'm not sure what has happened here. I've ran virus and spyware scans but nothing untoward showed up (will try again in safe mode tonight) I've not downloaded or installed anything dubious or otherwise recently so shouldn't think anything has come in.

I've also ran tuneup to see if there was any bad sectors but again nothing showed up.

Has anyone come across this problem at all?

I've had it a couple times, but only if I've had masses of pages open and Opera is using a lot of resources. It just seems to take a while to clear itself from memory.. Only happened a few times though!

Happens with me using Firefox in work for some reason.

Perhaps you were on a flash website or java site which somehow kept the browser running in the background?

I cant say I have masses of tabs open in opera. 3 or 4 at the most so could rule that out.

almost like a phantom of the..... :P

I only really use opera for browsing on a wapsite rather than any websites which used to be written in wml but got converted to xhtml so its not heavy on browser usage.

I've backed up my bookmarks so i'll probably just reinstall it and see if that works.

How long do you leave it before running it again? If you've been running it for days (and the history is therefore massive) it takes my copy a minute or so to shut down after quitting. If I try and reload before then I'll get that message.

happens to me once in a blue moon. Nothing major.

Opera +1

quite often it'll happen a couple of times in an evening several days running

It varies, if I've forgotten to check something it can be within a minute but other times I'll close it down and say play COD4 for half an hour, pop back in and that error will appear.

My pc is closed down every night so its only the weekends that its running for 10+ hrs, admittedly I've just checked the preferences and my cache is set just to 20mb with the memory allocation on automatic. it stores up to 200 web addresses but never used that much on this pc yet. I have just enabled cache clearing on exit so something may work otherwise its back to the drawing board.

I've had this, it is a bit random. I also have an odd "once in a few months" problem, whereby, it'll think I have cookies disabled even though I don't. I have to do a Tools > Delete Private Data and remove all my cookies, close & reopen Opera and start over. Very weird.

I think Ive solved the problem now and come to think of it i dont think there was a problem to begin with now.......for years I've been using the same version of opera, opera 8.0 and its only been the past couple of weeks that this problem has occured.....even tonight so I upgraded to the latest opera and things seem to be fine now so i think it was a case of me just being lazy that caused the issue :o :D

Hahahah. :D

I sometimes, rarely mind, get this error with the 9.64 version and have had it with the 9.xx versions.
