Odd problem with Crucial M4

Just changed my MBD for a Gigabyte Z77X- H3D with 16GB and an Intel i5-3570 from an AMD CPU and Gigabyte AM3 MBD. And using a Crucial M4 128GB

I know have an intermittant fault where Windows Explorer freezes and can be released by pressing Ctrl/Alt/Delete and when blue menu pops up I can return to the desktop and all is well...until the next time. During the freezing I get the spinning wheel and I can move this around with the mouse but nothing works until I do the CTL/ALT/Delete thing. Its like something is waiting like the bad old days of small memory. Sometimes I get "preparingSecurity Options... messgae when I press CTL/Alt/ DLT but once again it returns to the desktop and nothing is lost even mid typing an email...or even this message, which it just did

I have ACHI setup and an using the Intel SATA ports...should I be using the Marvel chipset ports ?

If I switch to an IDE drive I have no problem. Lots of tips around that its a virus.its not as I've rebuilt the OS. Or a faulty hard drive. I'm beginning to suspect somethings not set right in the BIOS and any help appreciated

Stick to Intel ports and ahci

Using latest firmware for the m4? Loads of issues of them freezing on older fw,check on crucials website and update it,be sure its stable enough to update it though

Thats what I thought. Read too many bad things about Marvel. Its on AHCI and I have updated and flashed the latest firnware for the SSD. It was fine on the old board. I guess I could try resetting MBD to default and then set AHCI and see what happens in case there is some obscure setting causing the proble.

Wonder if this looks like a MBD issue ?

What motherboard BIOS version are you using?

Does your memory support x.m.p profile? If so enable it and set to profile 1,with 16gb of memory you might need 1.08v CPU/vtt from stock 1.05v

Setting vcore voltage response to fast will help too

But flash to latest BIOS first

Thanks I'll try that. But yes I have flashed BIOS to latest version

Interesting...XMP was disabled and I've set it to Profile 1 but all CPU votages are on Auto and appear not to be accessable.

its called vcore voltage response,if should alter to fast with the + key,but lookslike x.m.p will help

I'll double check that wazza.

System locked up when desktop appeared but again it cleared on ctrl etc etc.

Something weird here and although I suspected the SSD I'm not so sure now. Maybe I should move this to the MBD threads ?

the mods will take care of it,

you have 16gb or ram and x.m.p won't adjust the cpu/vtt voltage, you usually need a touch more than stock 1.05v so I would try 1.08v-1.10v

then try setting vcore response to fast and pwm phase control to extreme if you have the option

does seem memory related if it randomly freezes like that

Discovered that to adjust voltages I needed to be in "3D" on the MBD BIOs screen. Adjusted x.m.p to profile 1 again and saved that. Adjusted CPU vtt to 1.08 but I can't se any options to set Vcore voltage to fast...just to increase the voltage.... and nothing for pwm phase.

But i'll how that goes .. thanks again

not sure on that board,it might not let you,but it's no big deal

x.m.p and cpu/vtt are the main ones,if it still does it idk whatelse it could be

that's a new model mb isn't it from gigabyte? don't think ive seen a h3d before,it could be a bios bug with your ssd idk

are you definatly on the intel sata3 speed ports? tried it on the intel sata2 speed ports to see if it still does it?

tested with different sata cable?

Sorry its a Z77X - D3H

I'll try the cables and different ports in the morning. I'm on Port 0 which I think is the Intel SATA III port. have also just swapped out the 4 x 4GB Kingston HyperX mem for 2 x 4GB Corsair vengence memory to see if that changes anything

Flashed the BIOS and its still the same. However, If I switch to SATA HDD it all works fine. So either its a faulty M4..which was working fine before on my Gigabyte GA MA790XT UD4P which is 3 years old or there is a compatability issue with this Z77X.

I could try a new SSD...maybe a Samsung 840 256GB before giving up on the MBD. Can't really see it being the CPU.

So I've changed the memory, updated the bios and MBD drivers and the only way I get consistency is with a HDD

Have you tried updating the SSD firmwire to see if that helps it? wazza300 did ask before but it seems you haven't given this a go yet.

Just checked and I am on 070H so at least thats good. Heres the odd thing. On boot up this morning PC boots up up to the desktop and just before the network icon and a couple of other task bar thing appear the PC freezes with the spinning wheel appearing ONLY on the tackbar at the bottom. When I move cursor/wheel upwards is turn back to the pointer. Still frozen mind you. Then after a couple of minutes everything loads and is OK...for now.

Its as though its just taking a while for something to load...a driver of some kind. But it obviously is causing temp freezes at other time as well but this is not the first time at boot up

Not counting any chickens...feathered or othwerwise

I have swapped the SSD to SATA 2 ports and so far so good after an hour.... but lets see what happens as the day continues ;)

If I haven't said it before...many thanks for chipping in guys. Really appreciated. I want to continue and upgrade with SSD drives and get that SAmsung 840 256GB so this was a bit of a disappointment.

if this works that would indicate a conflict (?) on the SATA 3 ports at least with SSDs and possibly a Gigabyte issue ?

I can't see this as I'm a real cynic when it comes to over hyped cables. But is there any benefit in buying "6gb" cables ? Or would that be just like some of the HDMI type thing ?

cables are all the same regarding speed

would be good to test another ssd on the sata3 ports to work out if its an ssd or motherboard problem
