Odd tethering issues

Hello chaps,

I have recently begun using a tablet connected to the Internet via my HTC Sensation using the portable Wifi hotspot.

It has been a surprisingly frustrating experience. Often, for no apparent reason, the Internet is chronically slow. As in taking almost 5 minutes to get to the point where I could post this thread kinda slow. Yet sometimes it performs perfectly.

So, network issues. But no...

When this is happening, which is more often than not, I have a perfectly strong 3G signal. The Internet on the phones browser works perfectly. And most interestingly I can use my laptop through the same wifi hotspot perfectly, too. Even when the tablet is struggling the Internet connection on my laptop remains perfect.

It's really confusing and is close to making the tablet useless for mobile web browsing.

The tablet works perfectly on conventional wireless networks. It is an iPad Mini.

Any ideas?

And posting that just worked fine. That's what's so odd. It either performs really well or it doesn't. It's totally intermittent.

Rebooting sometimes fixes it but the problem always returns. It's basically made the device worthless for mobile web use and I cannot understand why. Posting this on my phone as the iPad is yet again not loading pages despite being connected.

I don't get it. Never have this problem using my laptop in exactly the same way yet the iPad has done this on every trip since I got it.

Knowingly apple its probably got something that nerfs it as punishment for not buying the 3g model

Try changing the useragent on the tablet so its not presenting itself as a mobile browser? I've found Vodafone especially seem to be doing some transparent proxying/caching with mobile/"WAP" traffic (with some intermittent congestion or something on the proxy server(s)) but don't apply it to "Desktop" traffic.

EDIT: Ooops saw it works fine on the phone itself so that probably isn't causing issues with the tablet. (Unless its a difference between the useragent on the phone and tablet).

If that was the case surely it would affect browsing on my phone, too?

Just rebooted the iPad and its now working lightning fast as I would expect. I give it all of 5 minutes before it starts playing up again, though. Just seems to be no logic to it.

Just keep posting on here about it. Its likely one of those issues that never occurs when trying to show the problem :p

Cannot find server on every page now. Internet obviously working as I can post this on the phone

Can't even begin how to work out what this is. How can it be in intermittent issue only affecting one device? The iPad works fine on fixed WiFi.

I had issues with a Macbook Air which would only connect properly via Bluetooth.

Found this online, not sure if its any use:

On Orange android phones I've had it has been done by means of using a specific APN on the phone for modem/broadband, and a separate one for normal stuff.
They also make it so you cant delete or modify the APNs.

However, if you just create a new APN with no 'type' and select that for use, the phone uses it for everything and tethering works fine.

If that doesn't work, you can of course replace the OS software with something custom that hasn't been fiddled with by your operator.

It seems to happen with Bluetooth too. And I can tether any other device inc my laptop without any problems.

It's just the iPad mini that has a love hate relationship with tethering and I can think of no technical reason why this might be the case.

If it was carrier limiting then it would just not work rather than work great one minute and not the next. Plus I would expect anything like that to have as much if not more effect on the laptop.
