Odd Windows Startup Sound Problem

Using Windows XP,my start-up sounds no longer work.The rest of the sounds in windows work,just not the start-up ones.The odd thing is when I set up an account for my wife on the same pc,the start-up sounds play.This has been happening for a while now.Is it a codec issue or something similar I'm missing?
