Oddbins goes into administration

Another casualty of supermarkets.

When I was a boy my old man bought just about all his beer from the pub and if not an off license. There was plenty of them around. Three I think in the village I grew up in.

Now though you can go into a supermarket and buy some amazing offers that it's never worth going in one.

well, Threshers went under a few years ago, I'm not surprised as I think they were owned by the same people... However, It's a shame they won't be around any more...

Shame really, they weren't too bad considering they were a chain. Though 95% of the time I buy wine online from Berry Bros & Rudd, it was still handy to walk in for the odd bottle here and there.

Disappointing. There are very few places left where you can get more specialist drinks. Supermarkets are good for cheap offers on big brands, but they just don't have that much range. There are still a few stores up here that do more unusual stuff but they are fairly far away from me in other towns. They are all independent shops that tend to do luxury food, clothing and other goods. Guess I'll be buying more and more online.

Does the general public really want all that choice though, as it is the supermarkets devote a whole aisle to the stuff.

Personally I can't remember more than 10 wines and usually buy the same ones, I'm assuming somebody else more knowledgeable is buying the 600 other types they stock

The people I know that buy wine by the box all get it from online suppliers

expect to see, game, comet, currys, dixons, hmv, etc all close down within 10 years time too due to supermarkets.

as well as some clothing stores.

supermarkets will slowly take over everything.

These are going to close because their business model has been overrun

Game - I get all my games on Steam now, or some other downloadable store
Comet/Currys/Dixons - a toaster is a toaster, I'll buy what someone else has reviewed favourably online.
HMV - I still buy CD's but I doubt anyone else does, who wants physical media in the age of watching films on iPads and cloud storage?

Supermarkets would be wasting their time and floorspace trying to replicate all the above and wouldn't make any more profit than they did.

i think comet mainly sell TV's, laptops, camera's, Washing machines, hoovers, etc over toasters.

you can now get tv's and hoovers in asda, its not long before they start doing everything else.

they would be stupid to try and replicate the above stores, thats why they only stock a small shelf or 2, instead of thousands of feet of floor space.

they mainly stock the top 10 in games, cd's, dvd's, blu rays, and not anything and everything like game and HMV, its a far more profitable model, carrying less stock.
