odysee - supposedly a viable alternative to YouTube?

Perhaps I've misread the article, which is eminently possible. But the article seems to be conflating two different issues. They are being sued by the SEC for unregulated trading of a security (the cryptocurrency at the heart of their platform). The white supremacy posts are a different issue.

To be fair to the article, I don't think it went out of its way to conflate the two issues - it just mentioned that they were being sued and was clear about the reason.

Good isn't it? Two ads to watch a 15 second long boat fail video.

Will have to give that a go, as you say the number of ads on YouTube is ridiculous now. I also find it weird how what I'm recommended differs between devices logged into the same account, videos that are recommended on my tv that I would actually like to watch never seem to appear on my phone.

I don't think anyone will be threatening YouTube as the leader of the market for a while yet, the only competitor that has slightly worried them is TikTok and YouTube created shorts to counter that.

The quality of your feed takes a while to get right though and can easily be skewed if you watch something that you don't normally want to see (political video someone shares with you for example) but you can hide that stuff. They do need to work a bit on the balance of showing new content you might be interested in and just keeping it focused purely on the same subjects as it can become a bit repetitive.

I just read that guys post, Lunduke, and his gripe seems to be mainly that Odysee chose, in his opinion, a low quality video to promote over his.

It sounds to be like he's got involved but he expected something in return and didn't get it.

I notice how these guys who complain about expletive replies never tell us what they said in their initial post to the person.

None of these platforms are creators friends. They are all using other peoples work to promote their platform.

It appears, from this guys complaint, that Odysee are trying to attract another crowd to the platform by choosing to promote a video of that nature. This guy seems to be upset that the purity as gone. It was always going to go. Platforms have to expand across as many genres are possible, otherwise they will be niche and fail.

Odysee has upset Linux Journo Bryan Lunduke and he will no longer be part of it. :)

That guy has turned into a prize muppet. This is something that can be so ironic about the free software world, they get so obsessed with muh freedomz they end up swallowing themselves whole, like he has done.

Sinking a shedload of time into writing, developing and configuring FOSS software which is vastly inferior, in many cases, to proprietary software. It's like the Debian "social contract" or the fallout over systemd, who gives a crap about that. Just use your system as a tool to get things done or die tweaking it.
