My mum wants to buy a new 4x4 in the near future...

Current shortlist is as follows:

Land Rover Discovery TDV6 HSE
Mercedes ML320 CDI SE
Toyota Land Cruiser LC5 D-4D

Out of those, I would pick the Disco, because it's got everything as standard, has 7 seats, and should tow pretty well. However, it weighs about as much as a house, and isn't exactly the prettiest car around.

The Merc isn't bad, but you have to add about £8000 of options to get it up to Discovery spec, and even 'essential' stuff (e.g. Off Road Pro pack, AirMATIC suspension) is a couple of grand. It'll probably break all the time, too.

The Land Cruiser also has plenty of kit, but it just feels a bit cheap inside, and not very special. Certainly not like nearly £40,000 of car should do. It's engine is also pretty agricultural.

Does anybody have any thoughts? Cars I might have overlooked, perhaps...

Please note, it's actually going to be used for it's intended purpose, i.e. off road and for towing a horsebox, so no 'Don't get a 4x4' stuff, thanks ;)

I think it's pretty much agreed by everybody that the Disco is the best 4x4xfar so no contest. I don't find the stylin' that bad, although my fav discos are the older style. (Series II Disco??) However, I saw a landcrusier at MacD's earlier and thought it looked pretty nice from the outside. But I'd probly get a disco.

I personally would go for the Disco3, as I like the styling, and also they're very good off road. Does the Merc actually have any decent offroad capabilities? Second choice would be the Land cruiser, but they look really old fashioned and rather ugly to me.

With the AirMATIC suspension and the Off Road Pro pack, yes, it's quite good. As standard... it's pretty rubbish.

One car I forgot about.... what about a Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI Altitude?

Pretty highly specced, but I don't know how good it'd be off road.
