Off to Hong Kong in 3 weeks....travelling with DSLR

I think it's worth a visit to Macau. I've been twice now.

Second (or third ) time round I stayed overnight and got to see more of the place (though not as much as I could)
They just about finished building up Fisherman's wharf (next to the port) which is a good few hours of strolling around (a number of themed areas)

The Venitian casino (pics below) is worthy of a visit and you really cannot go to Macau without souvenirs :D

BTW these were all taken with point and shoot :( I'm hoping to get better shots with my DSLR if I go again :)

I'm going to head out to Macau for one day. I know it probably won't be enough to see everything there but will be a good opportunity for some pictures. Will also be heading up to shanghai :)

Cathay pacific

Same airline as me then. So this is my advice. whoever told you that they dont weigh your hand luggage is wrong because they do mate.

At heathrow they weighed mine which is a lowepro fastpack 350 bag with my camera and laptop and they complained and moaned i wasnt allowed to take it as hand luggage! after trying to offload some weight out of it(even put my tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens in my pocket!) i was going back and forth for nearly an hour complaining to them. i finally got it sorted by this time seeing someone else in another checkin desk and the guy never weighed it!

However, coming back home to the uk from the philippines they AGAIN weigehd it but this time said its fine as i told them i had a DSLR and the woman behind the checkin counter asked her manager and all was well.

moto of the story? cathay pacific DO check the weight of your hand luggage. they even weighed my wifes hand bag mate. Im not talking ball either because i just came back from the philippines 2-3 weeks ago. here are some pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/josh1408/

edit: stopover was in HK as well so you probably even boarding the exact same plane as me too. keep your load upder 7kg and they wont moan.

Thanks dude, I will keep this in mind. :D

You must be really unlucky as I've went there 3 times in 3 years, 5 of us every time. At one time I had a mini suitcase and not one trip was weighted.

May be I got lucky :)

Well i went to philippines again last year with cathay pacific and bought the exact same bag with me and they never weighed it back and forth. must have gotten unlucky this time around or they changed their policy and are more strict.

This is what i would do. buy a lowepro fastpack 250 or something similar backpack. stuff only a few lens and maybe some of your bits and bobs their and make sure that dont weigh over 7kg and then buy a massage shoulder bag like a lowepro 160/140 aw classifield or think tank retro 20/10 and put just your camera body and the longest heaviest lens u have. that shouldnt be over 7kg and u will have offset maybe 4-5kg off of your normal backpack hand luggage as your allowed one piece of 7kg hand luggage plus a small laptop/camera bag

sorry for reviving an old thread, but i'm off to hong kong this saturday :D

Will also be visiting china for 6 days and macau for 1 day. Pics to come in 3 weeks time haha
