Someone I know got pulled last night and was booked for speeding under the code E131. The policeman said the codes have changed recently.

Is this correct? I haven't heard of this and I can only find the normal list of codes online that have been used for years.

Cheers
Paul

ive never heard of anything of the sort

nor have the insurance companies, just looked on directline and nowhere does it give me the option to select that as an offence code

and correct me if im wrong, but do you not have to wait for the offer of the fixed penalty by post ?

This is what I have initially told the person. The whole scenario really seems dodgy to me to be honest. I didn't think that there had been a change of codes I just wanted to be sure before I tell him.

He was pulled over by a lone policeman who said he was doing 55mph in a 50mph limit. The evidence offered was the policemans word and apparently a calibrated speedo (so unlike a vascar no recorded evidence). The policeman then had to apparently get his book out to find out the code to which he wrote E131.

I am going to get back to my mate as it all just seems wrong to me.

im pretty sure he's clear then

there needs to be 2 officers to prosecute on the basis of their word only

there also has to be clear calibrated evidence, from a VASCAR, or radar gun or similar

Traffic cars can i believe prosecute somebody, as they are set up for this. But traffic cars nearlly all have VASCAR on board etc.

some bloke in a panda car cant be considered to be using "a calibrated instrument"

my mate got off on just the technicality

Never heard of a E131 here - We normally receive things like this from the police as to new codes for RT offences...

It was apparently a volvo which would say to me traffic car. The policeman however said his word and calibrated speedo. I have already said why didn't he use the Vascar etc to this person.

And as for having to get a book out to find out what code he should fine my friend under tells me he wasn't a traffic cop hence not knowing how to use the vascar. I personally think it was a normal policeman taking the car to another station and doesn't like motorbikes! I mean 55 in a 50? I know its over but not by much.

I'm gonna keep on at him to find out more as at the moment he wants to roll over and accept it but I think something is wrong here.

what has he actually done so far ?

what piece of paper has he got ? has he surrended his license ?

afaik you wait for the fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points to come through. Its not plod in the cars job to decide if this offer is made or not. And if he was done for doing 55 in a 50, his superior is likely not to bother. Most police forces will allow 10% + 1, so he'd have to be doing 57mph before he was going to be prosecuted.

this is before we get onto the technicality that he cant actually prosecute on his own without a calibrated instrument.

Trying to find out at the moment. It only happened last night so hopefully he hasn't done anything yet!

Do not hand out the fine at the side of the road these days if it is a fixed penalty? Its been a few years since I had any. In fact it was just before the fine was upped to £60 that I last got any points. But back then I got the whole thing on the side of the road which I had to fill in then send off with my license to where ever it was.

im not sure tbh

i seem to remember having to wait for my offer of 3 points to come through when i was pulled, but it was back in 2001 so my memorys not that clear on what happened.
